Well met, gentle lords and ladies!
In the Middle Ages, the term chatelain or castellan referred to the commander of the castle. The feminine form, chatelaine, was the woman who supervised its daily function and kept the keys. Frequently, she was in charge of hospitality to any guests. In the Middle Kingdom, we use the term chatelaine or chatelain to refer to the officer who assists newcomers in their efforts to find a place within the Society for Creative Anachronism. Some kingdoms use the term hospitaller or castellan instead of chatelain(e).

A program for BOTH Newcomers and Chatelaines
The intention of Elders and Novices is to provide folks new to the SCA with a contact person to assist with acclimating to the culture and traditions of our game. The relationship between the Elder and the Novice is intended to be of a defined period, primarily informational in nature, and one desired by both the Novice and the Elder. A coordinator will assist local and regional chatelaines with matching across organizations, assisting with requests, and looking into the possibility of working interkingdom for folks on the move.
