November 15, 1999

Greetings unto Lady Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lord Alan Fairfax, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the October 1999 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Alan Fairfax, early enough to arrive by January 1, 2000, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Affrica nic Pharlain Sidhein Mhoir. New Badge. (Fieldless) A wreath of escarbuncles and roses argent, barbed and seeded proper.

{Name reg'd 3/93}

If my memory serves, charges on a fieldless badge must be conjoined so this would have to be returned.

2) Aidan of Aran. Name and Device Resubmission. Per bend sinister argent and sable, a martlet displayed and a hog statant counterchanged.

The client's previous submission (Aeron of Martlett's Lair) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 1/99 for lack of acceptable documentation and also on 2/98 by Rouge Scarpe for an unknown reason. Aidan is in Withycombe (7) as the name of a 7th century monk. It is also found in Coghlan (10). No documentation for the toponym was included. The client would like an authentic Irish name.

The client's previous identical device submission was returned along with the name.

3) Derdriu MacMurcada. New Name and Device. Argent, two dances purpure between two swans sable.

Derdriu is a header spelling in Ó Corráin & Maguire (70) and MacMurcada is a header spelling in Woulfe (394). The client cares most about having an Irish name.

4) Derdriu MacMurcada. New Badge. (Fieldless) A lion's head caboshed vert.

{Name submitted on this LoI}

5) Dilan MacAnTsaier. New Badge. Vert, on a chalice argent, three mullets in chief vert, a bordure embattled argent.

{Name reg'd 8/95}

This item was pended on the 9/99 ILoI for lack of sufficient funds. This problem has now been resolved.

6) Eveline Guillemot. New Name and Device. Gules, a cross bottony and in chief three mascles Or.

Eveline is in Withycombe (54) under "Evelina." It is also in Reaney & Wilson (158) under "Eveling." Guillemot is mentioned in Reaney & Wilson (494) under "Willmot" but undated. Guillemot is in Dauzat (314). The client cares most about sound and having a French name. She wants an authentic 13th-14th century name but will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

7) Eveline Guillemot. New Badge. (Fieldless) A mascle per pale Or and gules.

{Name submitted on this LoI}

8) Gabrielle Taliaferro. New Name and Device. Purpure, a garden rose proper entwined around a descrescent argent.

Gabrielle is dated to the late 16th century in Perouas, et al, Marie, Jean et les Autres: Les Prénoms en Limousin depuis un Millénaire (100) which may have normalized the spelling. Taliaferro is dated to 1534 in the LDS records. There is a letter attached as documentation that actually seems to argue that the name combination is improbable (!) and subject to orthographic variations. She cares most about the last name than the first. She would like an authentic 15th-16th century French-Italian name. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

I was under the impression that we did not register garden roses any more, but I'm probably confused.

9) John Black. Name Resubmission (Appeal?).

The client's previous (identical) submission was returned by Laurel on 5/99 for an aural conflict with John Blacas (name reg'd 4/92). To address this conflict, he encloses a letter of permission to conflict from John Blacas. John is in Withycombe (84) and Black is in Reaney & Wilson (46).

10) Lilias of Goldenford. New Name and Device. Azure, a bend cotised Or, between a salamander and a lily argent.

According to the documentation, Lilias probably originated as a pet form of Elizabeth and is dated to the 13th century (per Withycombe [n.p.] if I read the documentation correctly). Goldenford is a constructed placename. Both elements are found in Reaney & Wilson (no page numbers given). She cares most about having an English/Scottish border area name (c13-15th centuries) and wants the name to be authentic for the desired period. However, she will NOT permit MAJOR or MINOR changes.

11) Mistig Waetru, Shire of. New Group Device. Per chevron azure and argent, five mullets in chevron argent and a laurel wreath vert.

{Name reg'd 5/92}

A petition of support is enclosed.

12) Morwenna atte Whiteoke. New Name.

The documentation for the given name is a unusually incomprehensible Gabriel letter (#653) which I honestly can make neither heads or tails of, but which seems to document the name. It is worsened by the fact that the citation style is so improperly done that I cannot derive exact sources [if any of this seems harsh, bear in mind that I would not accept this level of work from my undergraduates and thus see no reason to accept it here]. Thankfully, the client was very helpful and added her own summary, which I quote in full: "Morwenna is the name of an early virgin saint of Cornwall. There is a place named after her (Morwenestohe) documented in 1275. It was also documented in the writings of William of Worcester in 1478. He latinized the name to Morwinna. There is also documentation of a Morwenna who was one of 25 children born to the King of Broccan of Breconshire. This accounting of children is mentioned in writings from the 14th century documenting the life of another saint, Nectan. Morwenna is still used today as a feminine name in Cornwall." As near as I can tell, however, this Gabriel report never documents the name Morwenna to period at all. It consists of multiple conjectures but no solid evidence. As such, I consider the given name undocumented highly plausible. Hopefully, someone else can provide documentation which is comprehensible and useful.

The byname is a locative created by compounding two period words (white + oke). The words are documented in a dictionary of Chaucerian English (www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/ rbeard/diction5.html) and seem plausible.

She cares most about sound and would like an authentic 14th-15th century Cornish, Welsh, or Scots Gaelic (highlander) name.

13) Morwenna Llyn Llydaw. Device Resubmission. Or, on a hurt, a seahorse erect contourny ermine.

{Name reg'd 5/99}

The client's previous submission (Or, on a hurt a horse's head couped argent) was returned by Laurel on 5/99 for conflict with Ekaterina Vladimirovna (Or, on a hurt a horse's head couped argent) and for improper coloring on the forms.

14) Peter Trevor. Change of Registered Name and New Device. Per bend sinister bevilled azure and argent.

The client's registered name is Philip Trevor of Breckenglade (reg'd 7/87). Peter is a Biblical name and Trevor is a Cornish surname found in White, A Handbook of Cornish Names (59) (no photocopies included). He cares most about language and would like an authentic 14th century English name.

15) Rurik Brattahildski. Device Resubmission. Or chaussé purpure, overall two stags, attired of eight, respectant proper.

{Name reg'd 5/99}

The client's identical previous submission was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 1/99 for redrawing.

16) Sidric Swano. Device Resubmission. Per pale azure and argent, a pall between three swans counterchanged.

{Name reg'd 5/99}

The client's previous submission (Argent, a pall between three swans argent) was returned by Laurel on 5/99 for conflict with Ailith ferch Dafydd (Azure, a pall between a Celtic cross and two unicorns combattant argent).

17) Threewalls, Canton of. Group Device Resubmission. Per fess sable and vert, a fess embattled counter embattled between a laurel wreath and a chalice Or.

{Name reg'd 2/99}

The client's previous submission (Per fess argent and Or, a fess embattled-counter-embattled between in chief a chalice sable within a laurel wreath vert, and a base embattled sable) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 8/98 for identifiability and other problems. No petition of support was included.

The wreath needs to be fed. The blazon is mine. They submitted "Sable a barry of 3 embattled or, vert, in chief a Laurel leaf or in base a chalice or" which I felt needed some help. They are currently appealing their name. A name appeal (Valley of the Three Walls) was sent out on the 8/99 ELoI.

18) Tirnewydd, Marche of. Change of Group Device. Gules, a chevron inverted argent, a demi-sun issuant from the chevron and in base a laurel wreath Or.

{Name reg'd 7/85}

If this device is registered, the clients would like their current device (Argent, fretty gules, a laurel wreath and issuant from base a demi-sun Or) released. A petition of support is enclosed.

19) Tirnewydd, Marche of. New Group Badge. Gules, a chevron inverted argent, a demi-sun issuant from the chevron Or.

{Name reg'd 7/85}

The following submissions have been PENDED and the clients notified:

This item was pended for lack of payment (client sent a check payable to "Paul Goldschmidt" and one which I could not cash because it was drawn on a Canadian bank).
