Greetings unto Lady Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lord Alan Fairfax, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the September 1999 submissions (including the remaining Pennsic submissions that did not make it on last month's letter) for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Alan Fairfax, early enough to arrive by December 1, 1999, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

Please note that Rouge Scarpe has a new address and that I have a new email.

1) Aislinn Celine de Richemont. New Device. Argent semy of roses gules, a cat sejant erect sable within an orle of ivy vert.

We call this the feline version of "Where's Waldo," but you might have your own concepts. In any case, we feel the cat is drawn too small for a primary charge.

2) Anders Olafsson. New Device. Per pale azure and argent, a domestic cat's head affronty and in chief three anvils counterchanged.

The cat is "orbed vert" (with green eyes) if anyone needs to know.

3) Artemisia of Niceae. Device Resubmission. Purpure, a beehive argent within an orle of bees Or.

{Name reg'd 9/96}

The client's first submission (Purpur, on a sun Or a natural dolphin hauriant contourny azure) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 5/96 for conflict. The client's next submission (Purpure, on a sun Or eclipsed purpure a rose slipped and leaved argent) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 8/98 for used of a charged eclipsed sun. This is a completely new design.

4) Bran mac Tuathail. New Name and Device. Sable, a pale offset between two serpents argent.

Bran is documented in Jones, "100 Most Popular Men's Names in Early Medieval Ireland" (2). Tuathal is found in ibid (6) and Tuathail is the genitive form of it (which adding "mac" would require). The client cares most about having an Irish name.

5) Caenell verch Ailwyn. New Name and Device. Vert, on a pile between two escallops inverted argent, an otter statant proper.

Caenell is in Jones's, Welsh Miscellany (31). Withycombe (39), under "Aylwin" gives Ailwin (1189) and Aleywin (1273). Ailwyn seems like a reasonable interpretation. The client is interested in having a period Welsh name.

6) Conal Ó hAirt. Device Resubmission. Gyronny arrondi of six gules and argent, a wolf rampant sable winged argent maintaining a sword inverted proper.

The client's previous submission (Gyronny arrondi of six argent and gules, a winged wolf sable maintaining a sword inverted proper) was returned by Laurel on 12/98 for poor contrast of the sword against an argent field. At the time of the return, it was suggested that the client switch the field tinctures, which he has done to address the problem.

7) Duncan MacLachlan. Name and Device Resubmission. Azure, a stag rampant and on a chief argent a thistle fesswise and a thistle fesswise to sinister proper.

These items were pended on the 9/99 ILoI for lack of forms. The forms have now been provided.

The client's previous name submission (Keeldar MacLachlan) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 2/99 for lack of reliable documentation (the client used Yonge) of the given name. The client's new submission is completely undocumented (nothing at all was included). The client wants an authentic "1300 Scott" [sic] name.

Duncan (as a given name) is in Black (228). Maclachlan is in ibid (533) and dated to 1555-6.

The client's previous device submission was identical to this. It was noted at the time as being "probably registerable" but was returned with the name.

8) Freydís Sigurðardóttir in tryggva. New Name and Device. Or, a chevron between three ravens close sable.

Freydis is from the Vinland Saga (no page given). Documentation reads: "Can find no precedent in period (Sveriges Medeltida Personnamn) but this may be due to several factors: Christianization of Scandanavia, causing Freydis-of-the-saga to be regarded as even more unsavory than in pagan times and therefore an unlucky choice of names for a daughter. The construction should be correct (ex. Alfdís, Halidís, Oðindisa) according to the two-part theory of given names." Geirr Bassi (9) has Freygerðr and Eydís. We assume she means dithematic construction and that the Geirr Bassi examples show this pattern. Sigurðr is in Geirr Bassi (14) -- the client is using a correctly constructed patronymic based on this given name. in tryggvi means "the true," according to ibid (29) and is feminized, as per ibid (19). The client cares most about meaning and language/culture. She would like an authentic Old Norse name.

9) Gerlinda Uda Agast. New Name and Device. Vert, a decrescent between two cinquefoils Or, on a chief argent a pine cone vert.

Gerlinda is in "Dutch Women's Names Before 1100." Uda is in ibid. Agast is in "Flemish Byname from Bruges, 1400-1600." No further documentation is provided.

10) Harald Cristianson. New Name and Device. Per fess sable and Or, a demi-bear issuant from a cauldron counterchanged.

Harald is in Sveriges Medeltida Personnamn (XI: 118) as a header form. Reaney & Wilson (96), under "Christison," have Cristianson dated to 1324.

11) James Barkley. New Name and Device. Argent, an oak tree purpure, on a chief embattled sable three goutes argent.

James is in Withycombe (171). Barcley or Barklye are found in Reaney & Wilson (27) and the change of spelling is attested to be nominal. The client cares most about sound and language/culture. He would like an authentic 16th century English name but will NOT permit MAJOR changes.

12) John Paul Devereaux. Device Resubmission. Azure, a mullet gules fimbriated between two battleaxes Or.

The client's previous submission (Azure, in fess a mullet gules fimbriated between two double-bitted battleaxes fretted Or) was returned by Laurel on 4/98 for conflict with Morgan Bloodaxe (Azure, a triangle of three battleaxes fretted Or). The battle axes are no longer fretted and the client appears to believe that this clears the previous conflict.

13) Marjory Ayson de Dundee. Name and Device Resubmission. Per fess vert and Or, two cats couchant respectant argent and a cat sejant affronty sable.

The client's previous name submission (Marjory Ayson de Dundee, Clann Gillacattan) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 2/98 for use of illegal punctuation. The client has dropped the latter elements. Marjory is in Withycombe (207). Black (236), under "Eason," has Ayson dated to 1360. Dundee was founded in 1296, according to ibid (229). The client wants to have an authentic 14th century name.

The client's pervious submission (Or, a cat statant affronty sable, on a chief azure two cats couchant respectant argent) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 2/98 for unrecognizable tinctures. I am unhappy about having the three cats in different postures. It looks very modern to me.

14) Olaf Blodhøx for Shadewes Company. New Badge. Per bend sinister able and gules, a bend sinister argent, overall a bull's skull argent.

While the form says "Shadows Company," Laurel registered this household as "Shadewes Company" on 4/96.

Overall charges are allowed some leeway in contrast with their background, but I'm concerned that a truly argent skull would fade away into the bend (particularly if the bend had been properly fed).

15) Richard Hode. New Name and Device. Vert, a phoenix rising and on a chief Or three towers vert.

Ricard is dated to 1066 and Richardus to 1127-34 (both as given names). Richard (as a surname) is dated to 1276 as a byname. All of these are found in Reaney & Wilson (377). Hode is dated to 1242 in ibid (234), under "Hodd." The client cares most about sound and will NOT permit MAJOR changes.

16) Roderick McCracken. New Device. Sable, a kraken argent orbed gules.
