Greetings unto Master Dmitrii Volkovich, Dragon; Lord Alan Fairfax, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the December 1998 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Alan Fairfax, early enough to arrive by March 1, 1999, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Berowelf von Haholtesheim. New Name and Device. Per salture argent and gules, two axes argent.

Berowelf is dated to 768 in Beck, Würzburg Geschichte in Bilddokumenten (123) as the third Bishop of Würzburg and confirmed in other attached documentation. Haholtesheim is dated to 788 in Gatscher, 1200 Jahre Hesslar (11). The client wants an authentic 8th-9th century East Franconian name and cares most about preserving that language/culture if the name must be changed.

2) Eldrich Moorshead. New Name and Device. Per pale embattled argent and vert semy of daisies argent, a frog statant contourney.

Eldrich is dated to 1275 as a given name in Reaney, Dictionary of British Surnames (107). Moorshead is a header spelling in Ibid (224). The only dated version (1260) is Murside. The submitter enclosed no name form. We have assumed all (new form) defaults.

The proposed blazon gave the frog as "sejant" but the little guy looks too erect for that. Can frogs be statant (looking for a better blazon)?

3) Frederic of Lub Shiochail. New Name and Device. Gules, on a pile azure fimbriated between two seahorses maintaining quill pens, a castle argent.

This was listed as a change of registered name and a device resubmission. However, the client's previous name submission (Fredric vom Schloss Seepferdchen) appeared on the 7/94 ILoI but was never registered. The client's previous device submission was identical to this and never acted upon. Further, the client has enclosed new checks. Therefore, these items are being handled as new submissions.

The documentation for the name notes the existence of Frederick II (1218-50) and Frederick III (1463-1525), both observed in the American College Dictionary (no page numbers given). The New Cassell's German Dictionary (607) is also cited for an unspecified reason. No copies of documentation are enclosed, but the name does not seem problematic. The client cares most about sound.

Lub Shiochail is the name of an SCA branch whose name was registered in 5/88.

The proposed blazon read: "Gules, on a pile azure fimbriated argent a castle triple towers with portcullis open argent, between two seahorses bearing quill pens in chief argent. I have attempted to simplify the blazon.

4) Iohannes of Glenfiddan. New Name and Device. Paly wavy azure and sable, on a pall Or, three crosses fitchy gules.

Iohannes is found in Select Documents of the English Lands of the Abbey of Bec (http://www.panix.com/~mittle/ names/talan/eng131). For the locative, the documentation notes, "'Glenfiddan' was mentioned in a fictional work by Diana Gaboldon in a conversation by 2 Scots set in 1733 AD as an existing Scottish town." The client cares most about the language/culture of Northern England/Southern Scotland and wants the name to be made authentic for that region in the 13-14th century.

Obviously, the documentation on the locative is not much help, but the closest I could find is Glenfiddich.

Complex line divisions with poor contrast are frequently returned by Laurel. We may want to consider whether this is a problem or not.

5) Kyra ni Gilbride. Name Resubmission.

The client's previous submission (Zoe ni Gilbride) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 12/97 for illegal combination of Gaelic and non-Gaelic elements. By changing the given name to her modern name, the client hopes to have avoided the previous problem.

Kyra is the client's modern given name and claimed under the Modern Name Allowance. Gilbride is found in Black (299) and dated to 1178-98.

6) Lia de la Fountaine. New Device. Quarterly gules and vert, two ginko leaves and two horse chestnut leaves, stems to center, Or.

7) Robert Da Hwyll. New Name and Device. Argent, a stag passant sable, a chief embattled vert.

Robert is the client's modern given name and claimed under the Modern Name Allowance. The latter two elements are intended as a bastardization of the Welsh words "good" and "humor/cheer" to create a name meaning "good humored, making women laugh, or laughed at by women" (the client prefers the former two meanings). An (unidentified) English-Welsh dictionary gives Da as "good" and Hwyl as "humor." The copies of these sources are enclosed, nor is there any indication that Welsh names were formed in this manner. The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic Welsh name (no specified time period).

8) Sara de Mowbray. New Name.

Sara is documented in Withycombe (264) and dated to 1379. de Mowbray is documented in an enclosed family history which notes a Geoffrey de Mowbray (1049-1093) who advised William I of England. A later William de Mowbray was a surety of the Magna Carta, according to Browning, Magna Charta Barons (120). The client cares most about meaning.

9) Ulrich von Landstuhl. Device Resubmission. Per chevron vert and azure, a wolf rampant maintaining a halberd, a bordure argent.

The client's previous submission (Per chevron vert and azure, a wolf salient maintaining a halberd argent) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 9/98 for conflict with Jonathan Crusadene Whitewolf (Gules, ermined argent, a wolf rampant argent). The client has changed the posture of the wolf to gain an additional point of difference and clear the conflict.

10) Willelm le Pied. New Name and Device. Per bend sinister sable and azure, a foot argent.

The client's documentation consists of a letter from St Gabriel which the client has selectively quoted from. Willelm is noted as "the most common spelling of the name in your period" but no documentation is provided for this blatant assertion. le Pied is asserted to be a Norman word for "people with large feet": "Nicknames like these are fairly common in Middle English." There is no documentation for any of these elements (only a list of SCA notables who should know better than to provide "documentation" without sources). For all intents and purposes, this name is simply undocumented (sorry Fairfax!). The client will NOT permit major changes and cares most about the meaning and wants the name to be authentic for an (unspecified) time period.

Willelm is in Withycombe (294) and dated to c1067. Hopefully, Rouge Scarpe can provide the documentation for the obviously period byname.

11) Yehudit bat Rina. Name and Device Resubmission. Per bend sinister gules and sable, a semy of cornstalks in saltire Or.

The client's identical previous name submission was on the 6/94 ILoI and never acted upon. The device was pended by Rouge Scarpe for lack of a registered name on 6/98 and then returned on 11/98 for the same reason. This resubmission is an attempt to give us a kick in the pants.

Yehudit is given as Hebrew for Judith. Rina is a variant spelling of Rena (which is documented only as a previously registered name -- Rena Thorbjornsdottir [reg'd 5/86]). The name needs serious help with its documentation.

The following submission has been RETURNED and the client notified:

R1) Gregory Hatton de Este. Device Resubmission.Azure, a chervon between three griffins Or.

This was pended on the 10/98 ILoI for lack of a registered name and improperly colored forms. The client failed to reply to repeated attempts to rectify the situation and thus we are forced to administratively return this submission without processing it.
