Greetings unto Master Dmitrii Volkovich, Dragon; Lord Alan Fairfax, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the July 1998 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Alan Fairfax, early enough to arrive by October 1, 1998, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

This is the last of the summer LoIs. Starting next month, we will be handling Pennsic letters as they come in. Remember that Pennsic consults are being sent in by the clients. We may get a huge pile of them next month or they may trickle in during the next couple of months (probably both!). Regardless, as I stated last year, I will not pend anyone's submission in order to "lighten" the load. The Administrative Handbook is quite clear that I must handle all submissions within one month regardless of the quantity. As the sole author of the past two Pennsic LoIs (238 items in 1996 and slightly fewer than that in 1997), trust me that I can handle whatever comes my way. However, my arrogance should not be taken as a challenge. We'd like to not burn anyone out this year. So, bear in mind that you are not obligated to comment on every item on every letter. When the big letters start coming in, do what you can. Do triage and look for the most likely problems. Check random items. Start at the end of the letter rather than the beginning. We will appreciate whatever you can do. I'll try to repeat this advice when the load picks up.

Finally, thanks to the cooperation of Rouge Scarpe and the gracious permission of Dragon, the ILoARs are now available on-line at the same site as the ILoIs. 1) Alan Fairfax Aluricson. Device Change Resubmission. Bendy sinister gules and Or, for augmentation on a canton sable an annulet Or.

The client's previous submission (Bendy sinister Or and gules, for augmentation on a canton sable an annulet Or) was returned by Laurel on 4/98 for conflict with Eustace FitzJames (Bendy sinister embattled Or and gules). The client's augmentation was granted on 6/94 in the Middle Kingdom. In the resubmission, the client has gone from bendy sinister Or and gules to bendy sinister gules and Or.

2) Andelcrag, Barony of for Order of the Salient Hart. Group Badge Resubmission. (Fieldless) On a hart salient Or, two lightening bolts in saltire sable.

(Grand Rapids, MI) {Name reg'd 6/84}

The group's previous badge for this order (order name reg'd 12/93) (Per chevron sable and argent, a hart salient proper) was returned by Laurel on 2/97 for problems of identifiability and contrast. If this one is a problem, the group's pursuivant requests assistance. The only requirements are that it should be simple, include a hart is some form, and incorporate the baronial colors (sable, argent, and Or) if at all possible. A petition of support is enclosed.

3) Anders Olafsson. New Name.

Anders is in the English translation of Bahlow (15) which dates it to 1372. Olaf is found in Ibid (392) as the name of a saint dated to 1100. The client wants to be "Anders son of Olaf" and will accept Olafsen if necessary.

4) Aylwin Thoraldson. Device Resubmission. Per chevron azure and sable, in chief a Latinate Celtic cross and in base an increscent and a decrescent argent.

The client's identical previous submission was returned by Laurel on 4/98 because the 12/97 MK ELoI failed to include a miniature of the device. No other issues were raised in Laurel's return.

5) Bronwen Arianwen of Rivenwood Tower. Name and Device Resubmission. Or vetu ployé azure, a Lacy knot purpure.

The client's previous name and device (Bronwyn Angelina of Rivenwood Tower) were returned by Rouge Scarpe on 6/98 for a series of problems, including the use of the masculine form Bronwyn in a feminine name and the combination of Welsh and Italian elements. Bronwen is found in Withycombe (55) and has been ruled to be "SCA compatible." Arianwen is a feminine name found in Jones, "A Welsh Miscellany" (31). Rivenwood Tower is her branch name (reg'd 3/88). A lengthy argument is attached that the apparent double given name is in fact "Bronwen ferch Arianwen" with the "ferch" removed, as per Jones (30). The client cares most about sound.

The device was returned with the name and has simply been resubmitted as it originally appeared.

6) Cecil the Silent. Device Resubmission. Azure semy of swords inverted, a feather bendwise argent.

The client's previous submission (Sable semy of swords inverted, a feather bendwise argent) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 7/97 for redrawing after having been a Lost Sheep.

7) Constance Fairfax. New Name and Device. Azure, an orle of martlets Or.

Constance is found under "Hoblet" in Reaney & Wilson (233) dated to 1279. Fairfax is in Reaney, Origins (235) but the client provides no date. The client cares most about sound.

8) Constance Grey. New Name and Device. Azure, three water bougets Or.

Constance is found under "Hoblet" in Reaney & Wilson (233) dated to 1279. Grey is in Reaney, Origins (237) but the client provides no date. The client is interested in having the name be authentic for 14th century England.

9) Dervin Norwood of Hedgely Moor. Badge Resubmission. Per saltire argent and vert, two oak trees argent, a demi sun issuant from base vert.

The client's previous submission (Per saltire argent and vert, two oak trees argent, a demi-sun issuant from base vert) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 6/97 for redrawing.

10) Dorothea van der Zee. New Badge. (Fieldless) A basket proper.

11) Eustachia de Westwic. New Name and Device. Per bend purpure and vert, a bend argent between two amphorae Or.

Eustachia is found in Withycombe (112) dated to 1200. de Westwic is in Reaney & Wilson (483) dated to 1219. The client cares most about preserving the language of English and would like her name to be authentic for 13th century England.

12) Genevieve of Starleaf Gate. New Device. Per bend argent and sable, issuant from the bend a thistle proper and a crescent inverted Or.

The forms indicate that the name is "submitted with this device" but no name forms or payment for the name were enclosed. Without a registered name, this will have to be returned. I am also not happy with the thistle's positioning which really should not be issuing from the field division.

13) Gunther Friedrich von Bodenheim. New Name and Device. Lozengy azure and argent, a lion's head cabossed gules.

Gunther is dated to 982 in Fisher, The Medieval Empire (315). Friedrich Reiser was a German leader in 1458, according to Wunderli, Peasant Fires (80). Bodenheim is dated to 754, according to a page on the town's history, located at www.bodenheim.de/geschi.htm. The client cares most about sound and is interested in having an authentic German name (no particular time period designated).

Gunther is dated to 1281 in Brechenmacher (I: 612). Ibid (I: 566) has Friderichs dated to 1313 and Vryderich dated to 1357.

14) Gwenhwyvar verch Owen ap Morgan. Device Resubmission. Argent, on a plate on a pall vert a rose proper.

The client's first submission (Argent, a chevron vert and in chief a garden rose fesswise proper distilling a goutte de larmes from the stem) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 11/97 for "non-period asymmetry, non-period rendering of a rose, and so on." Her next submission on the 7/98 ILoI (Argent, a chevron between three ??? vert) was withdrawn by the client. This is a complete redesign. We are concerned about excessive layering.

15) Gwilliam Rhydderch of Essex. Device Resubmission. Argent, on a cross sable, a dagger argent pommeled and handled gules, a bordure per pale gules and sable.

The client's original device was returned "literally years ago" for conflict and "a few other reasons" although we can find no record of it. These problems have allegedly been addressed in this resubmission. New payment has been enclosed.

16) Heloise D'Anjou. Device Resubmission. Azure, on a saltire argent, a robin close to sinister proper, a bordure argent.

(F) Starleaf Gate. {Name reg'd 10/97}

The client's previous submission (Azure, on a bend sinister argent, a robin close to sinister proper) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 6/97 for conflict with Corwynn of Thornwood (Azure, on a bend sinister argent a thorned slip embowed throughout sable). The addition of the bordure helps to clear the previous conflict. A robin proper, as drawn here, is brown with a red belly.

17) Isabella Sharman. Device Resubmission. Azure, a sexfoil, on a chief invected argent three sexfoils.

Winged Hills. {Name reg'd 11/97}

Her previous device (Azure, a sexfoil, a chief invected argent) was returned by Laurel on 11/97 for conflict with Catrin ferch Dafydd (Azure, a rose slipped and leaved within a bordure dovetailed argent). She is attempting to get by the conflict by charging the chief.

18) James McCorquodale. New Name and Device. Argent, issuant from a torse nowed five times in fess Or and gules, a demi-stag gules.

McCorquodale is dated to the late 14th century in The Highland Clans (103). No documentation of the given name is provided.

James is dated to 1240 in Withycombe (171). Black (477) has an entry for the surname but provides no dated reference for this particular spelling.

I am not sure about the reblazoning I have put above and suggestions for the blazon would be most appreciated.

19) Julianna Peri da Novellara. New Badge. (Fieldless) A thimble argent.

The client wished to have this badge jointly owned with the "Silver Thimble Guild" but as this guild's name has not been registered yet, we have followed the submitting pursuivant's permission to register it solely to Juliana until the Guild registers its name.

20) Kelly Jennewein. New Name and Device. Or, a swallow volant sustaining in its beak a needle azure.

Kelly is claimed using the modern name allowance although the client ironically wants the name to be authentic for 13-14th century German (someone needs to tell consulting heralds to flag these inconsistencies!), perhaps she means only the surname. Jennewein is dated to the 7th century in the banned Hanks and Hodges, Surnames (281).

Brechenmacher's (I: 769) earliest date is 1766 for the variant Jenerwein. Bahlow [English] (276) gives 1800 but note that it is earlier.

21) Maria Caterina di Boni. New Name.

Maria is dated to 1540 in Brucker, Florence (265). Caterina is dated to 1593 in Ibid. Boni is in Ibid (261) and indicates that the name died out in the 18th century, although no dating of the name itself is provided. Several examples of double given names are cited. The surname is also found in Herlihy and Klapisch-Zuber, Census and Property Survey of Florentine Domains in the Province of Tuscany, 1427-1480 (an on-line reference).

Maria is in De Felice, Nomi (251). Caterina is dated to 1380 in Ibid (102).

22) Rikharðr inn Vegandi Svansson. Device Resubmission. Per bend embattled vert and Or, two mullets in chief in bend argent.

The client's previous submission (Per saltire checky gules and argent and Or, in fess two battle axes sable) was returned by Laurel on 5/98 for contrast problems.

23) Robert of Starleaf Gate. Device Resubmission. Sable, on a sun rayonny eclipsed gules.

The client's previous submission (Sable, on a mullet of four greater and eight lesser points argent, a pomme) was returned By Rouge Scarpe on 8/97 for not being a heraldic design. The client has followed Rouge Scarpe's suggestions in the redesign.

24) Robert of Starleaf Gate. New Badge. (Fieldless) On a keyhole gules, enflamed proper, a plate.

The "enflaming," drawn as orange, is not properly tinctured ("enflamed proper" is gules and Or), so this will need to be returned for a redraw.

25) Vivienne du Lac. New Name.

Vivienne is found in Dauzat, Noms et Prénoms (598) under "Vivien" and in Withycombe (291) who prefers Vivienne. du Lac is in Dauzat, Noms et Prénoms (354) under "Lac." The client will NOT accept changes.

The following submission has been PENDED and the client notifed:

P1) ???. New Device. Per fess rayonny argent and sable, in chief two wings displayed conjoined gules.

(F) Donneshafen.

As the submission form indicates, the name is "not submitted yet." Without a registered name or name in process, this has been pended with instructions for the submitter to send forward a name.

(F) Gregory, MI.

This item was pended on 4/18/98 for lack of name forms and the apparent appeal of that name without any documentation (supporting or otherwise). As the client has not responded to our request for such forms and documentation within the alloted 90 days, we are returning the submission without processing.
