Greetings unto Master Dmitrii Volkovich, Dragon; Lord Alan Fairfax, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.
Here are the May 1998 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Alan Fairfax, early enough to arrive by August 1, 1998, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor changes to grammar and/or spelling.
1) Artemisia of Nicaea. Device Resubmission. Purpure, on a sun Or voided purpure, a rose stalked and leaved argent.
(F) Fenix. {Name reg'd 9/96}
The client's previous submission (Purpure, on a sun Or a natural dolphin hauriant contourny azure) was returned by RS on 5/96 for conflict. This redesign addresses the original conflicts.
2) Christiana de Avochelie. Device Resubmission. Argent, a stone sable, on a bordure azure, six crosses fleury argent.
(F) Mare Amethystinum. {Name reg'd 8/97}
Her previous device (Azure, a shakefork between a Celtic cross in chief, a length of chain and a fleur-de-lis, Or) was returned by RS on 4/30/97 for slot machine heraldry and incorrect depiction of a shakefork. This is a complete redesign.
3) Conal Ó hAirt. Device Resubmission. Gyronny arrondi of six argent and gules, a winged wolf sable maintaining a sword proper point to base.
(M) Fenix. {Name reg'd 9/96}
The client's original submission (Gyronny arrondi of six argent and gules, in dexter chief a hart sable) was returned by Laurel on 9/96 for a redraw. The client has opted for a new design.
4) David de Lindsay. New Name and Device. Per fess embattled azure and vert, a badger sejant contourny argent maintaining a thistle Or.
(M) Midewinde.
David is documented "as a name in common use" and is the client's modern middle name. de Lindsay is documented through the name "Baldric de Lindsay" to 1086 in Moncreiffe of that Ilk, The Highland Clans (no page provided). The client wants the spelling and grammar corrected for the language and meaning.
David is dated to 1196-1220 in Withycombe (80).
The field is extremely low contrast and Laurel has previously returned dark-dark complex field divisions.
5) Gaston d'Aubrecicourt. Device Resubmission. Or, a bear rampant, a bordure sable semy-de-lis Or.
(M) Falcon's Keep. {Name resubmitted on 5/98 ILoI}
The device was returned on the 4/98 ILoAR solely because the name was returned. It has not been changed.
6) Geniveve Rose D'Glendalough. New Name and Device. Per bend sinister purpure and vert, three roses in bend sinister argent, seeded Or and barbed vert, and a catamount Or.
(F) Rimsholt.
Genevieve is documented in Withycombe (127-8) but not the client's spelling of the name. Rose is in Ibid (258) and dated to 1316. Redundant documentation is provided from the banned Dunkling and Gosling. Glendalough is found on an undated map from Matthew, Atlas of Medieval Europe (no page number). The client cares most about spelling.
This last fact is a pity as the given name cannot be documented from the submitted sources and the last element is almost certainly incorrectly spelled ("de Glendalough" might work). The submission itself was an overall mess (too many device forms and name forms, but only one copy of documentation; insufficient funds made payable SCA, Inc (!); sent to wrong address; etc.) and a virtual textbook case of admin nightmare! Glendalough is also mentioned in Room, Dictionary of Irish Place-Names (61) but not dated.
7) Gwendoline de Lindsay. New Name and Device. Or, a unicorn rampant guardant sable.
(F) Midewinde.
Gwendoline is undocumented although the client notes that it has been registered as recently as 7/96. de Lindsay is documented through the name "Baldric de Lindsay" to 1086 in Moncreiffe of that Ilk, The Highland Clans (no page provided). The client will NOT allow changes to spelling or grammar.
Gwendolen is in Gruffudd (49) but not the spelling the client wants.
8) Jamie Blackrose. Device Resubmission. Gules fretty Or, a stagshead caboshed argent, on a chief Or a rose sable seeded Or barbed vert.
(M) Sternfeld. {Name reg'd 9/92}
The original submission was returned by Laurel on 9/92 for conflict with Audley (Papworth 883) (Gules fretty Or) which is no longer protected. The addition of a chief should also help to clear the potential conflict. The client's resubmission was sent in some time ago and lost in our Black Hole.™
9) Katherine de Lindsay. New Name and Device. Per pale dovetailed sable and purpure, a unicorn contourny guardant and a thistle argent.
(F) Midewinde.
Katherine is claimed through the modern name allowance. de Lindsay is documented through the name "Baldric de Lindsay" to 1086 in Moncreiffe of that Ilk, The Highland Clans (no page provided).
Withycombe (186) notes that the spelling Katherine (with an "h") came about in the 16th century thus the invocation of the MNA seems unnecessary here.
The field is extremely low contrast and Laurel has previously returned dark-dark complex field divisions.
10) Micheline Elphinstone. New Device. Azure, a pale between six roses, three and three, in pale Or.
(F) Falcon's Keep. {Name submitted on 3/98 ELoI}
Even though this submission comes from our own Opinicus, I am unhappy with the blazon and wonder if we could not just blazon it as a "a pale between six roses Or."
11) Midewinde, Shire of. Group Device Resubmission. Per fess azure and gules, a gate argent and a moon in its plenitude within a laurel wreath throughout Or.
(Minot, ND) {Name reg'd 2/98}
The group's previous device submission (Azure, a castle wall throughout sable, its tower surmounting a bezant, all issuant from a base vert bearing a laurel wreath Or, and in sinister chief a mullet argent) was returned by RS on 1/97 when the previous name (Messis Luna) was returned. In addition, the device was returned for a variety of other reasons including poor contrast, complexity, pictorial heraldry, and incorrectly drawn laurel wreath. This is a complete redesign. A petition of support is included.
12) Ramshaven, Barony of. Group Badge Resubmission. Gules, a ramshead caboshed, a bordure argent.
(Guelph, ON) {Name reg'd 11/93}
The group's previous submission of this badge ([Fieldless] A ramshead caboshed argent) was returned by RS recently (although the exact date of the return seems to be eluding me right now). There is no petition of support included.
13) Rebekah d'Achetet. New Name and Device. Per chevron vert and sable, a sword fesswise proper and a scales argent.
(M) Sternfeld.
Rebekah is in Withycombe (251) who notes that it was not used as a Christian name until after the Reformation. d'Achetet is attested to be a byname based on the verb acheter (to purchase) and documentation from an unidentified French-English dictionary is provided but there is no support for it being used as a byname. The client cares most about language and meaning.
I can find no evidence of this byname in use or even that it is correctly formed from the verb.
14) Roland d'Argentan. New Device. Per pale argent and vert, a tower within a bordure, all counterchanged.
(M) Far Reaches. {Name submitted on 4/98 ILoI}
The client originally submitted a slightly different device with his name and then asked that the device be withdrawn before it could appear on an ILoI. He now submits this redesign for your commentary.
15) Sigrid Draki. Name and Device Resubmission. Purpure, a dragon passant contourny Or between three martlets argent.
(F) Tirnewydd.
The client previously submitted the name Drakka Føroyar but I have no information about the return.
The client's documentation comes from a correspondance with Talan Gwynek who documents Sigrid to the 14th century in Lind, Norsk-Isländska Dopnamn ock Fingerade Namn (col 885). Draki is documented from Danmarks Gamle Personnavne (Part II [Tilnavne], col 220) as a header spelling. No dates for this precise spelling are provided. The client wants the spelling and grammar corrected for the indicated language and meaning (14th century Scandanavian with Draki meaning "dragon").
16) Simon Justus. New Name and Device. Azure, a saltire couped, overall an eagle feather inverted proper.
(M) Korsvag.
Simon is documented as a saint's name in Delaney, Dictionary of Saints (524). Justus is also cited in Ibid (336) as the name of a saint who died in 297. There is no evidence that it was used as a byname. The client cares most about meaning (unknown, as it is unspecified in the documentation). He wants the spelling and grammar corrected for the (non)indicated language and meaning.
Simon is in Withycombe (271) dated to 1197-1215. Reaney and Wilson (258; under "Just") date Justus as a surname to 1292 in the case of the name "Roger Justus."
The eagle feather here is argent with a sable tip.
17) Ursula Johanna Silbernagel. New Name and Device. Purpure, a needle palewise argent threaded Or, a bordure argent.
(F) Steren Codha.
Ursula is in Withycombe (286) who notes that it was common in the Middle Ages. Johanna is in Ibid (177) under "Joan" and dated to 1189-1220. Silbernagel is in Bahlow, Deutsches Namenlexicon (476) under "Silber" and undated. The client will NOT permit changes to spelling or grammar.
Silbernagel is dated to 1464 in Brechenmacher (II: 614).
18) Valley of the Three Walls, Canton of the. New Group Name and Device. Per fess embattled argent and barry embattled of three vert, Or, and sable, in chief a chalice sable within a laurel wreath vert.
(Portland, MI)
There is no documentation for the name. The clients are attempting to evoke the fact that their area is home to three prisons. They will NOT allow any changes to spelling or grammar (and, while it is not applicable to a group submission, they will not allow the creation of a holding name). A petition of support is included.
The name does not seem to follow period naming practices although its elements are registerable.
The blazon is my attempt to clean up what was submitted. I rather doubt that it is registerable.
