Greetings unto THL Richard Morgan of Cumberland, Draco, Lord Emrys Eustace, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds, from Tiarna Rory mac Feidhlimidh, Escutcheon.

Here are the December, 1996, submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Lord Emrys Eustace, by March 1, 1997, with copies to Dragon & myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor changes to grammar and/or spelling.

As a reminder, Lord Paul Wickenden of Thanet, current Shield Herald, will be taking over this office soon. January submissions should still be sent to me, with February submissions sent to Lord Paul. Please start including him with copies of your commentary. His address is with the others at the end of the letter.

1) Annabella MacClure (Shattered Crystal) Device Resubmission Purpure, in fess a viol between two thistles Or.

Her original submission (Purpure, in fess a viol between two thistles Or) was on the December, 1995, ILoI. It was returned at that time by Rouge Scarpe for redrawing (the original thistles were much too small).

2) Bubba Godgodsson (Shattered Crystal) New Name & Device (M) Per fess azure and argent, a roundel charged with two vultures palewise volant sinister, the one in base inverted, all counterchanged.

Bubba is found on page 119 of Onomasticon Anglo-Saxonicum (Searle, William George); several entries use the name. According to the client Bubba is also listed in the"Catholic List of Holy Names", though no copies areprovided.

Godgod is also in (Searle) on page 261; Godgodsson seemsa reasonable extension.

This is a submission with much time and history behind it. The date on his original submission (Zardrik Vansson) are September, 1979, with a letter of return from then-Dragon Graidhne ní Mhaire Ruadh dated 4/22/84. She says, "Laurel was unable to find Zartrik in Withycombe. Please send a copy of your documentation".

According to the submitting pursuivant, Some time ago there was a 'grandfathering period' of names so people could register the names they had been using for years without the regular amount of documentation. Unfortunately, the client's paperwork was lost several times along the way by various levels of the College of Arms. Hence, he missed the deadline for registration. In response, he went for " the most obnoxious name he could find, that being Bubba Godgodsson." While overall he would still prefer Zardrik, Bubba Godgodsson is the name on his Pelican scroll (not sure which name is on his Court Baron scroll).

(As a historical aside, on the original Heraldic Submission Information sheet, in addition to the regular name, address, documentation, etc., information, also requested was information on your first Society event, details behind any awards given (and from whom), offices held, personna background and information, and "...any socially recognized relationships to other members of the Society".)

3) Clare Agatha MacLeod (Castel Rouge) New Name & Device (F) Or, three dolphins haurient gules, all within a bordure nebuly sable.

Clare is in Withycombe (p. 67, dated in England from the beginning of the 13th C.

Agatha is in Withycombe (p. 5-6) as the name of a 3rd Century Sicilian martyr. There are at least four English churches named for her, and it was the name of the mother of Edgar Atheling, a daughter of Emperor Henry II, and one of the wives of William the Conqueror.

MacLeod is documented in Surnames of Scotland (Black, p.539) (unfortunately the photocopy is not very clear). It is also listed in The Clans, Septs, and Regiments of the Scottish Highlands (Adam, Frank, p. 261-263), and traced back to 1066.

4) Conall Fael Shattered Crystal New Name & Device (M) Sable, a chevron between three wolves' heads couped argent.

Conall is documented from Gaelic Personal Names (OCorrain & Maguire, p 56-57), as "...a very old, common Celtic name borne by many of the legendary kings and warriors of Ireland. Among its most famous bearers were Conall Cernach, the great Ulster hero; Conall Corc, legendary founder of the kingship of Cashel; Conall Echlúath, traditionally the ancestor of the O Briens...."

Fael is Gaelic for wolf (according to the client).

5) Elaine de Beauchamp (Nordskogen) New Name & Device (F) Vair en point azure and Or, a swan naiant contourny proper.

Elaine is documented from Withycombe (p. 91), as a French variant of Helen, although "...it is not found as an ordinary christian name until after Tennyson's Idylls of theKing (1859)".

de Beauchamp is documented from Magna Charta Barons and Their Descendants (Browning, Charles, p. 31), with one of the executor of the Magna Charta one Andrew deBeauchamp. It is also listed in Dictionary of British Surnames (Reaney, p. 27), dated to 1203.

6) Ragnarr Arnbjornsson (Aurea Ripea) New Badge (Name 11/86) Argent, on a pale between two Danish axes palewise, blades to the edge, sable, an owl close affronty argent, all within a bordure azure.

Although it does not show up on the mini-emblazon, there is a rather thin bordure on the large emblazon.

The forms make reference to "House Owl's Tower", but there were neither forms nor payment for such a registration.

7) Rhodri ap Rydderch (Castel Rouge) New Name & Device (M) Sable, a boar's head erased argent, langued gules, on a chief argent three escallops gules.

Rhodri is documented from The Chronicle of the Princes(Jones, Thomas, p. 5 & 11): Rhodri, king of the Britons, died in 754; Anarawd ap Rhodri, King of the Britons, died in 916.

Rydderch is also documented from (Jones, p. 29), in 1076 Rhydderch ap Caradog was slain by his first-cousin Meirchion ap Rhys ap Rhydderch, "through treachery". Rydderch is also documented in The Norman Conquerors (Walker, David, p. 13), as a prince of Deheubarth who died in 1055.

8) Sian verch Gruffydd (Castle Rouge) New Name & Device (F) Or, on a bend sable between two griffins passant vert, three escallops palewise Or.

Sian is documented in A Welsh Miscellany, Compleat Anachronist #66 (Jones, Heather Rose, p. 32) in a list of women's names.

Gruffydd is in (Jones, p.31), as Gruffudd, in the list of men's names. It is also in The Chronicle of the Princes (Jones, Thomas, p. 87), with Gruffudd ap Rhys attacking the castle near Arberth in 1117.

9) Talonvale, Shire of (Jackson, MI) New Group Name & Device Per chevron inverted Or and vert, in pale an eagle's talon erased sable and a laurel wreath argent.

Talonvale is documented from The Counties of Britain (Speed, John, p. 59). On a photocopied map are indicated such descriptive towns as Hornchurch and Fetherhorne.

10) White Waters, Shire of (Elkhart, IN) Group Badge (Name 4/84) Azure, semé of arrows Or, a chief wavy argent.
