13) Old St. George, The College of -- New Name --
(Old St. George) [Old St. George] That St. George was a figure known to the Middle Ages is attested to in, among others Neubecker’s “Heraldry: Sources, Symbols and Meaning on p44. That particular depiction is itself from the fourteenth century “Liber de Officilis Regum” of Water de Milimete. “The Oxford English Dictionary”, under the heading “George” says that St. George was adopted as the patron of the Order of the Garter and recognized as the patron Saint of England from the time of Edward III. That Colleges in the English-speaking world were sometimes named for saints can be seen from the names of some Oxford and Cambridge colleges. At Cambridge, there were period foundations of St. Catherine’s in 1473 and St. John’s in 1511. At Oxford there was also a St. John’s College, dating from 1555. That some place names are in the form “Old X” where “X” is another place can be seen from Old Sarum, known since 1003 and Old Windsor, from 1086. Although these are thoroughly modern spellings, it is the patter that is import. |
