Here are the October 2002 submissions for your consideration and commentary. All submissions will allow major and minor changes unless otherwise noted. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, early enough to arrive by January 1, 2003, with copies to Dragon, and myself. Special thanks to Lord Degary Golafre for allowing me to use his computer to finish the letter. 

1) Aidan MacDhughaill.(M) New Name and Device. Or, a sinister hand apalmy sable, in chief three crosses azure.

Aidan~ found in A Dictionary of First Names by Patrick Hans and Flavia Hodges p.6, lists it as an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Aodán, a diminutive of AODH borne by various early Irish saints.

MacDhughaill~listed in Scottish Highlanders by Charles MacKinnon, pp 174-175, as the Highland patronymic of Clan MacDougall dated 1306 and 1388.

Client cares most about meaning and prefers his name to be Anglicized Irish or Gaelic.

Geirr Bassi shows “Bárekr” (p. 8, col. 1) and “silfri,” meaning “silver” as a nickname (p. 27, col. 1). 

Original submission under Berok Silfrson returned by Rouge Scarpe 07/02 as undocumented/able. Originally submitted device (Sable, a bear’s paw print argent) returned on the same letter for multiple conflicts. Client cares most about language/culture (but doesn’t specify which).

10) Stonecroft, Shire of . Name and Device Resubmission. Argent, masoned sable, a mallet and feather in saltire gules, on a chief argent three laurel wreathes vert.

The clients want a name that represents the geographic location of their shire. The shire is in the middle of quarry country, in particular limestone. There is a plethora of limestone dwellings and buildings. According to Webster’s New International Dictionary 2nd Edition Unabridged p. 629, croft means hillock; field; a small enclosed field; a crypt; vault or cavern. Combining stone with croft, provides an accurate description of the shire’s physical locale. Petition of Support enclosed. 

Name returned by Rouge Scarpe 06/02 for lacking a designator. Original device returned same letter for “slot machine”. New submission is a redesign adding the wreathes to a chief. 

[Esct. Comment: Unfortunately, while they have cleared the problem of slot machine, an argent chief on a argent field (yes masoned sable but still predominantly argent) violates metal on metal and makes identifiability of the presence of a chief dicey…as currently drawn it looks like a variant of the “masoning” and not like a distinct ordinary in its own right. If they were to flip flop the color scheme of the chief, i.e. on a chief vert three laurel wreathes argent, the chief would be identifiable as such}
