Greetings unto Mistress Elena de Vexin, Dragon;THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from Lady Angharad Rhos Tewdwr of Pembroke, Escutcheon.

Here are the June 2002 submissions for your consideration and commentary, all submissions will allow major and minor changes unless otherwise noted. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, early enough to arrive by September 1, 2002, with copies to Dragon, and myself. Special thanks to Khahlil al-Hazrad and Adêle d’Eaubonne for their help.

Note on the web version of the ILoI. Due to differences in monitor settings and browsers, all colors are approximate and may not reflect the drawing's actual colors. Also if you find a broken link, I would appreciate an e-mail informing me of it. I do my best to ensure all the links work properly, but sometimes I type faster than I think.

1) Aislynn of Talonval(F) New Device. Per bend sable and argent goutty de poix in sinister chief a compass star argent.

(Talonval)

{Name Reg:??}

(click to view in color)

[Esct. Comment: The client’s submitted blazon is Per bend argent and sable, in chief a compass star argent and in base a goutty de poix (sable). I changed the blazon to reflect the drawing. Could find no record of client’s name being registered even though she indicates it is on the form.]

2) Alexander de Seaton of Altavia(M) Badge Resubmission. (Fieldless) A dragon in annulo Or within a bordure gules.

(McHenry, IL)

{Name reg:7/96}

(click to view in color)

Client’s original badge submission Gules, a dragon in annulo to sinister, flames issuant from mouth, Or. was returned by Rouge Scarpe on the 2/01 MK LoAR for conflict with Drachenwald's badge for the Orden des Lindquistringes, (reg 6/82 via the East): "[Fieldless] A ring formed of a wingless dragon in annulo widdershins Or, maintaining in chief with all four legs and mouth a gem gules." Client has added a bordure and changed the orientation of the dragon.

[Esct comment: Client’s name registered as Alexander de Seton of Altavia]

3) Alf of the High Mountain (M) Device Resubmission. Azure, two steel links crossed and interlaced argent.

(Kokomo, IN)

{Name Reg: 5/98}

(click to view in color)

Device was originally submitted on the November 1997 MK ILoI without a blazon but what happened to it from then, I have no idea. I presume it is missing in action. This is an exact duplicate of his original submission.

4) Alzbieta Michalik (F) New Name. Given name found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~scoconee/names.html> and surname found at http://www.polishroots.org/surnames/surnames_21.htm#MICHALSKI.

This documentation however only shows that the names are Polish but does nothing to indicate whether they were in use in period. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes and wants a Polish name.

5) Böjei Temür(F) Name Change and New Device. Azure, two Mongolian phoenixes in annulo Or.

(Grey Gargoyles)

{Name reg: 7/99 as Böjei Timür }

(click to view in color)

Client’s documentation—The Successors of Ghenghis Khan by John Andrew Boyle pp. 20,21,104,105,349,350,351--- for her original name submission had the surname spelled Temür unfortunately it got registered as Timür. She would like the official spelling changed to match her documentation. She will NOT accept MINOR changes and wishes her name to be REALLY authentic 13th century Mongolian. She also included multiple photos of Mongolian phoenixes in this configuration on 13th century artifacts to document the charge.

6) Cassandra Felicia.(F) Device Resubmission. Azure, two sheep passant respectant argent, on a chief argent, a shepherd’s staff fesswise proper.

(Kokomo, IN)

{Name reg: 9/00}

(click to view in color)

Client’s device returned on the 9/00 Laurel LoAR for having the sheep’s heads drawn in a trian aspect. This drawing has the sheep’s heads correctly drawn.

[Esct. Comment: The client’s blazon listed the sheep as regardant, I corrected the blazon to match her drawing. ]

7) Cecilia Fiametta del Canto.(F) New Name and Device. Azure, a squirrel three roundels argent.

(Park Forest, IL)

Fiametta- “Italian Renaissance Women’s Names” by Rhian Lyth of Blackmoor Vale at http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/italian.html

[Esct comment: Client’s original blazon : A squirrel, three bezants argent does not list the field tincture, nor are the roundels yellow. I corrected the blazon to match the drawing]

8) Cecily Wytherlok’.(F) New Name and Device. Purpure, a dove displayed argent blindfolded sable.

(Centerville, OH)

(click to view in color)

Cecily found in Withycombe p 60, and also at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/LincLSR/GivCtoF.html “An Index to the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire, England” by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan. Wytherlok’ (ibid) at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/LincLSR/BynW.html

Client wants her name to sound like 13th-15th century English and be of English spelling.

9) Custance the Compassionate.(F) Name Resubmission and New Device. Per fess wavy argent and sable a decrescent and an increscent azure.

(Spring Lake, MI)

(click to view in color)

Custance is dated to 1561 in Withycombe (72) under the heading Constance, Constantia. "the Compassionate" is merely identified as a descriptive byname with no citation or dating. Her original submission was Custance the Whimsical which was returned (10/01 MK LoAR) because ‘whimsical” could not be dated prior to 1653.

10) Dunecan de Moravia.(M) New Name and Device. Vert, on a saltire between four wolves heads erased argent, two arrows inverted in saltire vert.

(Talonval)

(click to view in color)

Dunecan— Black: “Surnames of Scotland” dated circa 1240-1249 (no page ref). De Moravia--- (ibid) dated 1203-1250 (no page ref).

11) Greylond of Dowglaß deGalloway.(M) New Name and Device. Sable, on a bend cotised Or, three hearts gules.

(Galloway, OH)

(click to view in color)

Client wishes to have a Scoto-Norman name from a Douglas clan in the late 12th to early 15th centuries. Greylond found in “Men’s Names from the Essex Feet of Fines” by Nicolaa deBracton at http://members.tripod.com/nicolaa5/articles/men.html.

‘of Dowglaß’ found at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/symonFreser/scottish14/scottish14_sur.html from “13th and 14th Century Scottish Names” by Symon Freser of Lovat. DeGalloway is a place name from Clans and Chiefs by Ian Grimble. If a holding name is needed the client would prefer it be Douglas de Galloway .

12) Gunther von Stein.(M) Name Change.

(Barony of Illiton)

He provided no documentation for this new name. Client’s original name, Rogallach the Strong reg’d. ??. Client will NOT allow MINOR or MAJOR changes and wishes his name to be 13th-15th century German.

13) Irial Féasruadh ó hlarnáin for House Bearheart. New Household Name and Badge. Per bend sinister dancetty Or and gules, a bear salient counterchanged.

(Mynydd Seren)

(click to view in color)

No documentation for name. Client wants name suitable for 16th century England.

14) Jason Irenfest.(M) New Name and Device. Quarterly gules and azure, a cross gules fimbriated Or, overall a dexter plate gauntlet clenched argent.

(Talonval)

(click to view in color)

Jason is client’s given name (copy of driver’s license enclosed).

Iren-- Jonsju “Studies in Middle English Nicknames” has ‘Irenbard’ (Ironbeard) , ‘Irnefot’ (Ironfoot) 1332, ‘Irenside 1333.

Fest—Fist is used to describe a hand as early as 1300: Oxford English Dictionary, p 971 Def 2a “ mani he smote of fot and fest” 1314. “Studies in Middle English Nicknames” also shows ‘Whithand’ 1197, Wytehande 1297, and ‘Whitehand’ 1328, so it seems ‘irenfest’ (Ironfist) would not be an unreasonable combination. If changes to the name are necessary the client very much interested in retaining the sound of “ironfist” and does not wish a translation into another language unless the sound is retained. Also the client is very attached to this device as blazoned and would appreciate suggestions from the commenters for close (but passable) alternatives if it is found to conflict.

15) Middle, Kingdom of the for Award of the Baton. New Badge. Or, a flanged mace bend sinister-wise sable.

{Award name submitted 01/02 IloI }

‘Evergreen’ grandfathered see ‘Evergreen Herald’. Dragon indicates she will give up the heraldic title in lieu of the order/award name if this is a conflict

18) Milica of Varna.(F) Device Resubmission. Azure, four quill pens in fret and on a chief Or, two mullets azure.

(Canton, OH)

20) Olwen of Linby.(F) New Name and Device. Per bend sinister erminois and vert, in base three trillium sinister proper.

(Talonval)

(click to view in color)

Olwen—Welsh Names for Children, Heini Gruffudd p 76: “ Olwen daughter of Yshaddaden Ben cawr (=chief giant) in Culhwch ae Olwen. Clovers grow where she walks.” Also Withycombe, p 232 and “Olwen the Odd” registered 11/00.

Of Linby—Header spelling in Ewall, Oxford Dictionary of English Place Names, with ‘Lidebi’ Domesday Book, Lindebi 1164. Client will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

21) Quenild of Mercia.(F) Change of Holding Name/Name Resubmission.

(Greyhope)

Device and Badge under holding name Jennifer of Greyhope. Client originally submitted Quinn of Mercia, this was changed by Rouge Scarpe to Quene of Mercia and then returned by Laurel for presumption.

‘Guinilda’ Withycombe p. 141 used until the 14th century, often in the Norman form ‘Quenild’. Mercia—a Saxon kingdom in Southern England. Client wishes a 12th-14th century name and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

22) Wilhelm Michalik.(M) New Name.

(Barony of Illiton)

Given name found at http://www.rootsweb.com/~scoconee/names.html and surname found at http://www.polishroots.org/surnames/surnames_21.htm#MICHALSKI.

This documentation however only shows that the names are Polish but does nothing to indicate whether they were in use in period. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes and wants a Polish name.

23) Zygmunt Nadratowski.(M) New Name and Device. Per pale argent and gules a cross Osmorog sable.

(Talonval)

(click to view in color)

Zygmunt—“Polish Given Names in “Nazwiska Polaków” by Walraven van Nijmegan and Arval Benicoeur at http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/walraven/polish/.

Nadratowski—in addition to being the client’s legal surname, ‘locative form, indicating someone from or the owner of a place called Nadratow…there is a well-known Nadratow near Ml/awa in the District of Ciechanow” (email and map included). Also, Kasprzycki [IX :17] lists: “Nadratowski—Arms Nabram, recorded circa 1500; from Nadratowo in the District of Pul/awy [Palatinate of Lublin] and from Lubawa [Chel/m]. Wyttig assigns this family to the Rawicz clan—sources: Kuropatnicki, Borkowski, Wyttig and Uruski.

Client supplied documentation of the cross Osmorog as a period Polish charge dated to 1584 in one item and 1503 in another. The items are written in Polish and Latin, so I couldn’t tell much more.

[Esct. Comment: Unfortunately the client’s drawing is not a terribly good rendition of the cross shown in the documentation, so I am including the pics for the commenters to reference. But it is a good resemblence to the cross shown here which is part of a good all round reference on Polish-specific Heraldry at http://www.szlachta.org/heraldry.htm

If a cross Osmorog is not acceptable as a charge then the alternative blazon, Per pale argent and gules, a cross formy couped and counter-voided sable (the client’s alternative blazon) or Per pale argent and gules, a cross patté double sarcelled, sable would apply and match the drawing.]
