Here are the April 2002 submissions for your consideration and commentary, all submissions will allow major and minor changes unless otherwise noted. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, early enough to arrive by July 1, 2002, with copies to Dragon, and myself. Special thanks to Adele d’Eaubonne for her assistance with coloring and mailing.

1) Ashby Turley(F) Device Resubmission. Purpure, semé-de-lys and two sea dogs in fess Or.

Device (Per bend sinister wavy purpure and vert, two wolves statant Or) was pended (returned?) on the Feb 2001 LoAR for possible conflict. Client has completely redesigned her device in this submission.

4) Barony of the Flame New Badge. Sable, semé of sparks Or , a flamberge gules hilted and enflamed Or.

5) Berok Silfrson.(M) New Name and Device. Sable, a bear’s paw print argent.

Berok (ber-rok)~ is a Russian type of bear. Explanation: Father journeyed to Russia and saw this large bear and inquired into it. Found out the name of this type of bear was BER-ROK after a time he had a son. When he stepped out of the long house to announce it, he saw a huge bear just outside the door. He took it as a sign and named his son after the largest bear he had ever seen. (adult ber-rok can be 800-1200 lbs).

Silfrson~ Father was born with pale grey eyes so his parents named him Silfr (Norse for silver). *note client is aware the “r” should be dropped but thinks it does not sound right or would sound better with it. No other documentation provided. Client will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares most about meaning and sound.

6) Brice Colquhoun for Fellowship of the Oaken Blade. New Household Name and Badge. (Fieldless) In cross conjoined in center four rapiers proper, and in saltire stems conjoined in center four oak leaves gules.

Campbell: Black, George F. “The Surnames of Scotland: Their Origin, Meaning &History”, New York, the NY Public Library, 1986. p 390. Client will NOT accept MAJOR changes and cares most about sound in a late 14th century Scottish name.

Miller~A heading name in Bardsley Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames pp 532,533 dates “Miller” to 1572. Reaney and Wilson p 310 dates “Miller” in “Reginald Miller” to 1327. Client will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

10)Eirikr haggvandi Ivarrson.(M) Device Resubmission. Per fess dovetailed gules and sable, an Or axe and an Or bull’s head cabossed counterchanged.

11) Hamish mór Dubh nan Cath.(M) New Name and Device. Per chevron azure and Or, 3 crescents 1 and 2 Or, and in base a lion rampant gules.

Name developed by using Scots Gaelic from combining the names of two Scots of History. 1) Cailean Mór (big or great Colin) the first Campbell chief of documented record (1357) and 2) John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee. To wit: Ian Dubh nan Cath (Dark John of the Battles). Information from “Scotland and Her Tartans” by Alexander Fulton, UK 1991. It was common in Scotland to name a person or self after events and such, thus having done his heavy weapons authorization at night and being a big guy, he chose this name for himself. (Big Hamish of the Dark Battles). Client cares most about the name reflecting the aforementioned meaning in Gaelic.

12) Julianna de Pardieu.(F) Device resubmission. Purpure semé-de-lys, a unicorn rampant argent.

13) Marie Boleyn(F) Device Resubmission. Purpure, a dancer maiden Or and a chief argent, in chief a daschund sable.

Original submission was returned on the MK LoAR Feb 2002 for redraw and reblazoning. Client has changed the daschund proper to daschund sable but has still neglected to elaborate the blazon of dancer maiden.

[ Esct. comment: “Dancer maiden is not a recognized charge and needs to be more explicitly described (a Moorish dancer? A Saracen dancer?), (In fact how would a European herald have any way of knowing what an Islamic woman in harem attire might look like?!?! not to mention offending the daylights out of sharia law). Plus the blazon still does not describe her position (affronty arms upraised?) or attire. Several commenters(in the original submission) noted a “dancer” in Von Volborth’s “Heraldry, Customs, Rules, and Styles” p 193 except that this example is not a charge but a crest and furthermore is noted as the muse Terpischore and the arms date from 1937! All in all this does not feel at all like period heraldry more like “filk” heraldry]

14)Margyt Withycombe.(F) New Name and Device. Purpure, in bend a mullet and a horse head couped argent.

Margyt found at “Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames” by Talan Gwynek. Withycombe is found at “History of English Place-Names” (Mills p 366).

[Esct. Comment. Horse’s head is drawn completely devoid of internal detail, which makes it hard to distinguish; client should probably draw in some details. ]

15) Morgan of Angelsey.(F) Device Change. Per chevron purpure and vert, three apis melliferi displayed within a bordure Or.

[Esct. Comment: ye gods! There are six tinctures and five separately blazoned charges (not a charge group even) yielding a modestly estimated complexity of at least 8 (if you count all hand prints left and right as the “same” charge”) probably more. Furthermore, I have never seen a human handprint used as a charge-- hands, gauntlets, sleeves, fists, yes, but no handprints. Lastly, this badge is wholly and glaringly modern (say Olympic flag) in my opinion.]
