December 15, 2001

Greetings unto Mistress Elena de Vexin, Dragon; Lady Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the November 2001 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by February 1, 2002, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Hroar Stormgengr. New Name and Device. Gules, on a bend sinister Or, three balusters, overall a laurel wreath vert.

(Shadowed Stars)

Hroar was the legendary king of the Danes in Beowulfand listed in Jones, A History of the Vikings (no page numbers or copies provided). Gengr is attested to be Old Norse for "walker" (as found in the example of Gonguhrolfr - "walking Hrolfr"). For Storm, the client notes, "139 previous entries contain this fragment." Unfortunately, the client fails to explain what the source is for these elements, although it appears to be the Armorial for the "139 previous entries." See also #5 below.

Overall, this name submission can be considered undocumented and in serious need of support. Hróarr is in Geirr Bassi (11) but I have little help for the byname.

The device uses a laurel wreath, which is reserved to branches and royal peers. Although the submitter is a Master of the Laurel, this is not sufficient for registration of the charge.

2) Justinos Tekton. New Name and Device. Gules, on abezant a fleam sable, on a chief dovetailed Or, two keys fesswise reversed sable.

(Alderford)

The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (1082) documents two emperors named Justin (or Iustinos, if one transliterates the Greek). Tekton is Greek for "carpenter" according to ibid (382) and an unidentified Greek dictionary. Sandoval, The Directory of Saints (177) mentions that Justin was a martyr in the second century. Ross, Rulers and Governments of the World (114-5) references the same emperors. The client would prefer Justinos, but will accept Iustinos. He cares most about language and secondly about meaning ("Justin the carpenter") and would like an authentic Byzantine name.

3) Justinos Tekton. New Badge. (Fieldless) A cog wheel azure.

(Alderford)

{Name submitted on this LoI}

4) Marie Boleyn. New Device. Purpure, a dancer maiden Or, on a chief argent, a dachshund proper.

(Muskegon, MI)

{Name reg'd 11/98}

The dog needs to be more properly positioned on the chief and the maiden probably needs further blazoning.

5) Nonna Stormgengr. New Name and Device. Per bend sinister, vert and azure, in bend sinister throughout a trident argent between two koi embowed in annulo gules, argent, sable, and azure.

(Unicorn)

For the given name, the client cites the previous registration of the name (in 1978). For the byname, the client says: "simple combination of 'storm', of which 139 names contain this fragment on registry [presumably, the Armorial?], and 'gengr' - Old Norse meaning 'walker.' Example: Gonguhrolf - [walking Hrolfr], the Norse chieftain given Normany. Combine the two, 'Stormgengr.'" See also #5 below.

Overall, this name submission can be considered undocumented and in serious need of support.

The trident is apparently some artistic variation on a bend sinister, while the fish are multicolored (red head and fins, white-black-blue body). As such the device is difficult to blazon. The client proposed: "Per bend sinister, vert and azure, a trident argent, between two koi, embowed, in annulo."

6) Nonna Stormgengr for House Stormgengr. New House Name and Badge. Or, a baluster vert, on a bordure gules a motto: "Sporcus labor est sed alicui faciendum est."

(Unicorn)

For the name, the client cites (as was done in items #1and #5 that Storm has been previously registered 139 times as part of a name and that gengr is "simple Old Norse" (with noreference).

Consistency is a virtue, but this name submission can still be considered undocumented and in serious need of support.

The badge is to be jointly owned with Hroar Stormgengr (name submitted on this LoI).

7) Ser Nikolas Grigorevich Petrov. New Badge. Vert, a dragonfly, in chief three mullets one and two Or.

(South Euclid, OH)

{Name reg'd ??/??}

There is a Nikolai Grigorevich Petrov (registered in 1990) and the "Ser" may be a title, but it is not clear if this person is the same person (there is no Russian alternate for "Sir"). Rouge Scarpe should check Kingdom files (assuming we have anything that goes that far back). The badge is to be jointly owned with Serena Kimbalwyke (name reg'd 4/96).

8) Undewyn de Maccuswell. New Badge. Per bend sinister wavy azure and Or, two compass stars elongated to base and a single-masted caravel counterchanged.

(Alderford)

{Name reg'd 11/96}

9) Undewyn de Maccuswell. New Badge. (Fieldless) A single-masted caravel azure, the sail charged with a compass star elongated to base Or.

(Alderford)

{Name reg'd 11/96}
