Here are the September 2001 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by December 1, 2001, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.
Many changes around here. Northshield submissions no longer appear in these ILoIs. Starting on September 1, 2001, all Northshield submissions were to be sent to THL Moraig Anne Dummond (Sarah Fowlston, 3436 Minnehaha Ave S, Minneapolis MN 55406). After a good spell in the office, we bid farewell to THL Clarissa Wykeham, who has served this Kingdom and her office very well. She is replaced by the equally experienced and qualified Mistress Elena de Vexin.

The client's first submission (Per bend sinister argent and sable, a martlet displayed and a hog statant counterchanged) was returned along with the name by Rouge Scarpe on 1/00. The client's next submission (Per bend sinister argent and sable, a martlet displayed and a hog statant, a bordure counterchanged) was returned by Laurel on 1/01 for redrawing. The client has generally stuck to the same design.

Angelline is dated to 1528 in Scott, "Late Period Feminine Names from the South of France" and la Petita is dated to 1521 in ibid. The client would like to have a period French name from the 1520s.

Dicun is found in Reaney & Wilson (133, under "Dicken") in "Dicun Malebiss" and dated to 1207. York is dated to 1086 in Mills (399). The client cares most about sound and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

Elinor is found in Withycombe (96-97) and dated to 1604. Larke is in Reaney & Wilson (272, under "Lark") with a "Ralph Larke" dated to 1275. Le Dauncer is found in ibid (125, under "Dancer") and dated in this spelling to 1327. She will accept the dropping out of "Larke" if necessary, but otherwise will NOT accept MINOR changes.

Irene is found in Dauzat, Noms et Prenoms (336, under "Irène") as a baptismal name based upon a series of martyred saints from the 1st, 3rd, and 7th centuries. Elise is found in ibid (234, under "Elisée). It is also found in Withycombe (100, under "Elizabeth") as Élise - a French form of Elizabeth. Brabant is in Dauzat (62).

Isabetta is found in "Feminine Given Names from the Online Catasto of Florence of 1427." del Pomati ("of the apple") is in Fucilla (86). While not dated to period, the aforementioned "Feminine Given Names" gives Mei (apple), Bruni (plum) and Pesce (peach). The client cares most about having a 14th century Italian name and would like the name to be authentic. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.
8) James Cunningham. Admin Action/Transfer of Badge.

The client has requested that his badge (Per pale argent and Or, a Norse H [hagall] rune gules, overall an arrow inverted sable) [reg'd 1/01] be transferred to the March of Havenholde (reg'd 1/92).
| 9) Lamorak A' Dunsinane.
New Name and Device. Per chevron sable and purpure,

Lamorak is a character in Malory's Morte Darthur [sic] (179) and is supported by several different sources that all cite the same fictional character. Dunsinane is a header in Johnson (166) with a spelling of Dun Sinoen dated to 970. The client wants to have an authentic name for an unspecified language/culture and will NOT accept MAJOR changes to his name.
Unfortunately, no evidence has been provided by the client that the name was used by non-fictional persons in period. There is also no supplied evidence for the A' construction of the patronymic.

Leopold is found in Bahlow (Eng trans) (333, under "Leopld[t]") as a "scholarly form for Germanic Liutbald." Scott, "Medieval German Names from Silesia" lists Leupold. Bahlow (344, under "Lothar") gives the name of a region called "Lothringen" hence the byname.
11) Leopold von Lothringen for Khalid al-Hasan. New Alternate Name.

Marion is a header in Withycombe (209) and is dated to 1379 in this spelling. Catherine is found in ibid (186, under "Katherine"). It is also found in O'Brien, "Feminine Given Names Found in the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire." The client will NOT permit MINOR changes.
There is no indication that either element could be used as a byname. Will we assume that one of the elements is an unmarked metronymic?

Milica is cited in The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium (1197, under "Lazar") dates the name to the 14th century. Ibid(2153) dates Varna to the 12th century as the name of a fortress and earlier as a coastal region and river. Wickenden (n.p.) has Militsa dated to 1204. As this is simply a different transliteration of the same name, it reinforces the other documentation. The client would like to have an authentic 14th century Byzantine name.

For Tangwystyl and Rhys and the grammar of the name, the client cites Jones, "Constructing 16th Century Welsh Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/welsh16.html); Jones, "Women's Names in the First Half of 16th Century Wales" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/welshWomen16/given.html); and Jones, "A Simple Guide to Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/welsh13.html) [and she also cites from the same docs on the Laurel website, apparently believing they are different documents]. She cares most about having a Welsh name and wants it to be an authentic Welsh name.
The pale needs to be fed.

Tighearnán is found in Ó Corráin & Maguire (170, under "Tigernan"). Dikeman is dated to 1206 in Reaney & Wilson (134, under "Dickman"). The client cares most about having a byname that means "ditch-digger" or something similar. The client would like an authentic Irish name and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

Tomaltach is found in Ó Corráin & Maguire (n.p.) who note that "this name was particularly favored by the Connachtmen in the Middle Ages." Brus is found in Black (n.p., under "Bruce") and dated to the 11th century. The client would like to have an authentic 14th century Irish name and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

Vachlav is found in Wickenden (2nd Ed, 383) as a header spelling. The var Vaczlav is dated to 1215. Rodacki is found in Hoffman, Surnames (424). The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 13th century Eastern European name.
As the client has requested a period name (and permits changes), I would propose Rodaky, which is dated to 1472 in the Slownik Staropolskich Nazw Osobowycz (IV: 469). Ibid (VI: 84) has Waczslaw dated to 1305 and Waczlaw dated to 1390. I suggest that Waczlaw Rodaky would be a lovely Eastern European name.

Valla is in Haraldson (29) as a descriptive byname. Lúta is in ibid (13) as a feminine given name. Kolli is in ibid(12) and becomes Kolladóttir as a patronymic, according to the grammar section (17). The client would like to have an authentic 10th century Norwegian name.
