Greetings unto THL Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lady Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.
Here are the May 2001 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by August 1, 2001, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.
Aryanhwy will be moving as of August 15th. Her address will be: 150 Langdon #B2, Madison WI 53703.
1) Áine ingen Máel Pátraic. New Name and Device. Azure, a decrescent argent, in chief four conjoined foundation knots.

Aine is found in Withycombe (12) and used "for centuries." Máel Pátraic is in Ó Corráin & Maguire, Gaelic Personal Names (152) under Pátraic as the preferred early Irish way to use the name and means "devotee of St Patrick." The client cares most about having a Scots Gaelic name and would like her name to be authentic for the 10th century. She will NOT allow MAJOR changes.
Áine is in Ó Corráin & Maguire (19) who say that it maintained its popularity as a feminine name from "a very early period."
2) Alienor de Bathe. New Name and Device. Per chevron argent and gules, two suns and an eagle's head erased contourney counterchanged.

The client attaches a Gabriel Letter (#1710) which documents Alienor to 1202 in Gwynek, "Feminine Givens Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" and Bathe to 1130 in Reaney & Wilson (n.p.) under "Bath." The client cares most about having an English 13th century name and wants to have a name authentic for that language and period. However, she will NOT accept MINOR or MAJOR changes.
3) Aylwin Thoraldson. Device Resubmission. Per chevron azure and sable, a descrescent and an increscent in base, and overall a Latinate Celtic Cross argent.

The client's previous nearly identical submission (Per chevron azure and sable, in chief a Latinate Celtic cross and in base an increscent and a descrescent argent) was returned by Laurel on 5/98 for administrative reasons.
4) Branwen de Gray of Tewkesbury. Device Resubmission. Quarterly azure and gules, on a cross quadrate argent, a raven sable.

The client's previous submission (Vert, in chief two oak leaves Or, in fess two acorns dexter and sinister argent to one oak leaf Or, in base one acorn argent, within a bordure embattled Or) was returned by Laurel on 3/01 for non-period style.
5) Brighid inghean Murchada. Device Resubmission. Per pall inverted gules, Or, and sable, two bat-winged lions combattant Or and gules, and a glove palewise argent.

The client's identical previous device was returned by Laurel on 4/00 for redrawing of the wings.
6) Dyderich Wolfhart. Device Resubmission. Per chevron gules and sable, a chevron and in base a wolf's paw print argent.

The client's previous submission was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 4/01 for redrawing.
7) John Chandler. New Name and Device. Purpure, a bend argent.

John and Chandler are both attested to be in Reaney & Wilson, but no dates or pages are provided. The client wants a 16th century English name. He will NOT accept MAJOR or MINOR changes.
Neither element is problematical. John is in Withycombe (179) and dated to at least the 12th century. Chandler is in Reaney & Wilson (90) as a header spelling but this spelling appears to be OOP.
8) Mariana de los Mares Interiores. Name Resubmission and New Device. Argent, a sea-unicorn contourney vert, a base wavy purpure and argent.

The client's previous submission (Mariana Isabel de los Mares Interiores) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 8/00 for combining an unlikely double given name with an unlikely toponym.
No documentation is enclosed except for a letter of return from Incunabula and a follow-up email she sent to Incunabula (but not his reply). Incunabula writes: "'Mariana de la Mar' is authentic and you already have documentation to support it." (The client has interpreted this statement to mean that it is not necessary for her to provide that documentation). The rest is a mess. Intensive care for this submission is requested. She wants an authentic 15th-16th century Spanish name.
Also, it is very confusing to determine what name the client is actually submitting. She apparently wants Mariana de los Mares Interiores, but will accept Mariana de las Mares. But even she cannot seem to determine this and also apparently does not know what her original submission was either (!).
9) Michael Mackay. New Name.

Michael is documented as the name of an archangel in Barnhart, The New Century Cyclopedia of Names (2735). Mackay is a header in Black (522) and is further dated to 1408. The surname is further documented in Maclean, Highlanders (85 and 259) and dated to the 16th century. He wants an authentic Scottish name and cares most about sound. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes.
10) Muirgheal donn ingen Dhauíd. New Name.

The client encloses Gabriel reports #2272 and #1668. Muirgheal is date to 926 in Annals of the Four Masters, entry M926.6. Donn means "brown" in Gaelic and is datde to 1103 in The Annals of Ulster, entry U1103.3 as an addition to the patronymic byname. Dhauíd is dated to the 11th century in The Gaelic Notes in the Book of Deer (n.p.). She wants an authentic 6th-12th century Gaelic Scottish name and cares most about the language/culture of her name. She will NOT accept MAJOR or MINOR changes to the given name (changes to the other elements are fine).
11) Simonis Adriane. New Device. Azure, on a pale Or between two swords inverted argent, a cat salient sable.

The posture of the cat is a bit unusual. The client blazoned it as "rampant" but it really is not that either. Any suggestions? My second best one was "cat practicing Kung Fu"? :)

Gules, on a fess between in chief the phrase "There is no strength and no power but that of the Almighty and the All-powerful" in Arabic Kufic script and in base three fleams Or, a domed mosque of one minaret between a pair of drinking horns gules.
