April 15, 2001

Greetings unto THL Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lady Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the March 2001 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by June 1, 2001, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Ahelissa de Limington. New Name.

(Fruitport, MI)

Ahelissa is dated to 1188 in Scott, "Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" (http://www.panix.com/ ~mittle/names/talan/reaney). Limington is a toponym dated to 1186 in Ekwall (under "Limington," no page given). The client cares most about sound and would like an authentic late 12th-early 13th century English name.

2) Barbara atte Dragon for Yrsa grá hett. New Alternate Name.

{Name reg'd 4/94}

(Athens, OH)

Yrsa is found in Geirr Bassi (16). Ibid (22) gives the descriptive byname "inn grá" meaning "the gray" and "grabárðr" meaning "gray beard" and "gráfeldr" meaning "fur coat/cloak." It also gives "hetta" as a descriptive byname meaning "hood, cowl." The byname is created by combining these elements. The client cares most about having a name that would mean "gray hood" and suggests "inn grá hetta" as a possible alternative. She would like an authentic Viking (800-1100 era) name.

3) Barbara atte Dragon. New Badge. (Fieldless) A loom weight argent.

{Name reg'd 4/94}

(Athens, OH)

A variety of works documenting the existence of loom weights in period are enclosed. Hoffmann, The Warp-Weighted Loom (21) has pictures and dates the stones to the Late Iron Age. Hurley, et al, Late Viking Age and Medieval Waterford (421) catalog several loom weights that were found in archaeological digs. Guðjónsson, "Warp-Weighted Looms in Iceland and Greenland" in Textilsymposium Neumünster (178) notes that such weights are commonly found at Viking sites and shows several more photographic examples.

4) Barbara atte Dragon. New Badge. Gules, three loomweights in fess argent.

{Name reg'd 4/94}

(Athens, OH)

A variety of works documenting the existence of loom weights in period are enclosed. Hoffmann, The Warp-Weighted Loom (21) has pictures and dates the stones to the Late Iron Age. Guðjónsson, "Warp-Weighted Looms in Iceland and Greenland" in Textilsymposium Neumünster (178) notes that such weights are commonly found at Viking sites and shows several more photographic examples.

5) Christian de Xavier. New Name.

(Falcon's Keep)

Christian I (1426-1481) was a King of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden according to the Grolier Encyclopedia 1997 (CD-ROM). Francis Xavier (1506-1552) was a Jesuit missionary according to ibid. No indication is provided that the elements are compatible or that the "de" is necessary or correct. The client wants an authentic English/French name and cares most about sound. He will NOT accept MAJOR or MINOR changes.

The client's device was pended below.

6) Dúnchadh mac Gabhann. New Name.

(Illiton)

Dúnchadh is in Ó Corráin & Maguire (80). The byname is found in MacLysaght (133, under "MacGowan"). The client cares most about having a name whose byname means "the smith, son of the smith."

7) Eoghan Mac Bronain. New Name and Device. Vert, on a bend argent cotised Or, three ravens sable.

(Donnershoufen)

For documentation, the client merely cites a string of Gabriel Reports (1156, 1170, 1171, 1414, 1435, 2158 for Eoghan; and 1460 for Branain). As this will not be considered documentation for the College of Arms, we will need something more solid to provide the College with. The client cares most about having a Scots Gaelic (13th century) name and would like the name to be authentic for that time and place.

Eoghan is in Ó Corráin & Maguire (87) but I have no leads on the exact spelling that the client wants.

8) Marie von Rosenberg. New Name and Device. Azure, on a pile embattled between two roses argent, a panther rampant gules.

(Shattered Crystal)

Marie is found in the Census of Paris (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ names/paris.html). Rosenberg is a town in Germany that is dated to 1305 in Der Grosse Brockhaus (RIN-SOK: 132). She wants a name which is authentic for the 12th-14th centuries amd cares most about having a German name. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

9) Oleksandra Volkhovskii. New Name and Device. Per bend sinister vert and azure, a bend sinister ermine.

(Red Spears)

Oleksandra is documented as a genitive form of the Russian given name Oleksandr and dated to the 15th century in Bæcklund, Personal Names of Medieval Velikij Novgorod (188). The byname is undocumented, but is intended to follow the model of Nevskii (as in Oleksandr Nevskii). Volkhov is asserted to be the name of a river in the Novgorod region. The client cares most about sound, does not care about the gender of the name, and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

Because Oleksandra is the genitive form of the name, it cannot be registered on the basis of this documentation. The registerable version of the name is Oleksandr and is found in Bæcklund and also in Wickenden (4) and dated to 1266. The Volkhov is, in fact, a river in the Novgorod area. The origins of the name are obscure and unknown, according to Room, Placenames of Russia and the Former Soviet Union (225). The use of adjuctival endings (-skii) to create locative bynames is a common period practice (see Wickenden, xxix). The name seems quite plausible to be period and follows period style. Oleksandr Volkhovskii would be a good registerable name.

The feminine given name, Oleksandra is dated to 1364 in Wickenden (4). However, because the name is feminine, the byname would have to be feminized to agree with the gender of the given name. Thus, Oleksandra Volkhovskaia would also be a good registerable name.

In conversations with the client, she has not yet indicated a clear preference between the two options.

10) Rickard of Gwyntarian. Device Resubmission. Azure, on a pile argent, a griffin segreant armed and langued gules.

{Name reg'd 4/00}

(Rivenvale)

The client's previous submission (Gyronny azure and argent, a griffin segreant Or) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 11/99 for conflict with Degary Golafre of Pembroke (Quarterly sable and gules, a griffin segreant coward bearing in her dexter talon a Celtic cross and in her sinister talon a sword inverted Or). By fault of the Kingdom, the client was not notified of the return until 8/00 and was granted an extension of his grace period to resubmit.

This item was pended on the March 2001 ILoI for insufficient forms. The correct forms have now graciously been provided.

11) Rütger Meer von Harburg. New Name and Device. Azure, on a bend sinister wavy Or, three anchors azure, and in canton a sea lion rampant contourny argent.

(Shadowed Stars)

Rütger is in Brechenmacher (II:455) and dated to 1470. Meer is in ibid (II: 246) and dated to 1284. Harburg is dated to 1142 (in the spelling of Horeburg) according to the Encyclopedia Britannica (on-line). The client cares most about having an authentic German name.

12) Tárlach O'Maoil Eoin. Name and Device Resubmission. Vert ermined argent, a lyon rampant Or.

(Strikkenwood)

Tárlach is found in Ó Corráin & Maguire (169) and described as a modern var of Tairdelbach. O'Maoil Eoin means "devotee of St. John" and is dated to the 13th century as "Maol Eoin" (the name is later anglicized to Malone), according to Irish Pedigrees (635). The spelling "Ó Maoileoin" is found in MacLysaght, Irish Families (220); the spelling "Ó Maoil Eoin" is found in Grenham, Clans and Families of Ireland (149); and Ó Corráin & Maguire (129) have it as a given name as Máel Eoin. The client cares most about having an Irish name "of noble-blood" and wants a name which would be authentic for a 9th-14tjh century Irish nobleman.

13) Uadahlrich Sassmannshausen. New Device. Per pale azure and argent, a semy of grenades Or.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Florence KY)

I could find no record of the registration of this name.

14) Uadahlrich Sassmannshausen. New Badge. (Fieldless) A grenade Or.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Florence KY)

I could find no record of the registration of this name.

Is there a difference between a grenade and a goutte? If not, this conflicts with Iulstan Sigewealding ([Fieldless] A goutte d'Or).

The following submission has been PENDED and the client notified:

P1) Christian de Xavier. New Device. Per pale azure and gules, a fleur-de-lys argent.

{Name submitted on this ILoI}

(Falcon's Keep)

Only two copies of the device form were enclosed. The client has been asked to provide two more copies.
