February 15, 2001

Greetings unto THL Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lady Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the January 2001 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by April 1, 2001, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Aedon of Windhaven. New Name and Device. Pily vert and argent, a boar statant countourney proper.

(Clintonville, WI)

Aedon is documented with a fragment of a Gabriel Report (#1533) from 2/21/99. The name discussed in the letter, however, is Áedán. The bibliography is missing and so the documentation is insufficient (internal commentators with more free time than I are encouraged to submit the necessary missing references as Pelican will require them). Windhaven is an SCA branch name (reg'd 10/82). The client did not enclose a name form and so we cannot say if the client had any preferences.

2) Aillean ingen Fhlainn. New Name.

(Hawkland Moor)

The client cites a Gabriel Report (#2107) that is dated 10/3/00 and documents Aillean ingen Flainn (but it also supports the spelling Fhlainn). The given name is from Ó Corráin & Maguire (19). The second element (as near as I can tell) is not actually documented at all in the letter.

The client cares most about having an Irish culture name and wants the name to be authentic for 10th-12th century Ireland.

3) Ascelina Coeur de Loup. New Name and Device. Sable, a wolf rampant argent langued gules, on a chief invected argent, three hearts gules.

(Three Hills)

Ascelina is claimed to be found in Ó Corráin & Maguire but I could not locate it. However, it is dated to 1207 in Withycombe (2). The byname is based upon the pattern of "Coeur de Lion" (i.e., Richard I) but is otherwise undocumented. The client wants the name to mean "Ascelina Wolfheart" and would like an authentic French/English name.

4) Catteden, Incipient Shire of. New Group Name and Device. Argent, a demi-cat contourney sable issuant from a base azure, maintaining a laurel wreath bendwise sinister vert.

(Findlay, OH)

Catteden is a spelling from 1229 for Catton, according to Ekwall (91). A petition of support for the name and device is enclosed.

The group's designator is not indicated (they call themselves a "new proto-incipient group") but I am assuming that they will be a shire. If anyone knows otherwise, correction would be most appreciated.

5) Drue Galbraith. Name Resubmission.

(Turm an dem See)

The client's previous submission (Drusilla Galbraith) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 6/00 because there was evidence that the given name was used in period. The client has substituted her modern name for the given name.

Drue is the client's modern name (a photocopy of several forms of ID is enclosed). Galbraith is found in Reaney and Wilson (182) and dated to 1208-46 in this spelling. The client cares most about sound and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

6) Dyderich Wolfhart. New Name and Device. Per chevron gules and sable, a chevron and in base a wolf's paw print argent.

(Sternfeld)

Dyderich is found in Scott, "Late Period German Masculine Given Names: Names from 15th Century Arnsburg" (no URL provided). No documentation for the byname is provided.

7) Elspeth Clerk. Device Resubmission. Per pale argent and azure, a cross crosslet between four towers counterchanged.

{Name reg'd 9/99}

(West Chester OH)

The client's previous submission (Per pale argent and azure, on a tower, a pheon inverted all counterchanged ) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 7/00 for conflict with Gregor von Münchhausen ([Fieldless] On a tower per pale azure and argent, a dexter gauntlet clenched counterchanged). The client has tried out a new design.

8) Friedrich von Augsburg. Device Resubmission. Purpure, a lion rampant and on a chief Or three crosses formy gules.

{Name submitted on 7/00 MK ELoI}

(Appleton WI)

The client's previous submission (Purpure, a griffon Or and on a chief sable three crosses formy Or) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 12/00 for contrast problems. The client has changed the tinctures to address this problem.

9) Galiena Aubrey. New Name and Device. Azure, three horse's heads erased argent.

(Hawkes Keye)

Galiena is found in Withycombe (125) who notes that it "occurs not infrequently in 13th century records." Aubrey is found in Reaney & Wilson (19, under "Aubray") as a surname dated to 1279 in this spelling. The client cares most about sound.

10) Garrett Aubrey. New Name.

(Hawkes Keye)

Garrett is found in Withycombe (131) who dates it to the 16th century. Aubrey is found in Reaney & Wilson (19, under "Aubray") as a surname dated to 1279 in this spelling. The client cares most about sound.

11) Gillian Kateryn Taylor. New Name.

(Mynydd Seren)

Gillian and Kateryn are documented from the Laurel website (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ reaneyHZ.html). Taylor is documented from a different page on the same site (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ textile.html). No indication is given on the forms of how these sources document the names. The client cares most about sound and wants to have an authentic 13th-14th century name. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

12) Gwenllian Talbot. Device Resubmission. Per pale argent and purpure, a maunch and in chief three roses counterchanged.

{Name submitted on 1/01 MK ELoI}

(Border Downs)

The client's previous submission (Per bend azure and purpure, a maunch argent, on a chief azure, three roses argent, barbed vert, seeded gules ) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 11/00 for contrast problems.

Note: the RS database mistakenly states that the device was pended (the name was pended, but the device was actually returned on November).

13) Iamys Gillies of Watership Down. New Name.

(Tiffin OH)

Iamys is a Scottish version of James that is documented in Maloney, "13th & 14th Century Scottish Names" ( http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/symonFreser/scottish14/scottish14_given.html). Gillies is a sept of the Clan MacPherson, according to "The Clan MacPherson" (http://www.tartans.com/ clans/MacPherson/MacPherson.html). No documentation is provided for the typonym, but the client explains that he intends it as an allusion to the book of the same name (his modern family's attributed arms have two rabbits on them).

Because no names forms were enclosed, I have attempted to guess the client's intent from an enclosed cover letter. So, here goes: the client cares most about meaning and language/culture. It is unclear if he will accept changes but I would not recommend making any without a clear sign of consent.

14) Ingraham de Boynton. New Name and Device. Vert, a cross bottony argent.

(Border Downs)

Some element of the name -- the client does not specify -- is documented in Withycombe (76). Fosterr, Dictionary of Heraldry (29) has an undated reference to Thomas de Boyton. Arthur, An Etymological Dictionary of Family & Christian Names (77) mentions a toponym of "Boynton" but does not date it. Ibid (167) notes the name Ingraham or Ingram (also without dates). Boynton is further found in Genealogical & Family History of the State of New Hampshire (747) which dates the name to Bartholomew de Boynton who lived in 1067. There are references to the same cite on several websites (http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/ eastriding1.html#boynton; http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/ suffolk1.html#boynton; and http://www.triskelion-ltd.com/drquine/ boynton.html). The client cares most about meaning (having the name based on family genealogy) and wants an authentic 13th century English name. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

He will NOT accept a holding name.

15) Jacobus Tallon of Greenwich. New Device. Per chevron gules and argent, a cross formy in chief and three crosses formy fesswise in base counterchanged.

{Name reg'd 2/00}

(Athens, MI)

16) Malin Faierwood. New Name and Device. Or, on a bend sinister purpure, three suns Or.

(Mare Amethystinum)

Malin is dated to 1212, 1277, and 1297 in Scott, "Feminine Given Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/ names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Mary). Faierwood is a var of Fairwood, dated to this spelling in 1576 in Reaney & Wilson (161). She cares most about sound and would like an authentic English name for 1584.

17) Malin Faierwood. New Badge. Purpure, a sun and a bordure Or.

{Name submitted on this LoI}

(Mare Amethystinum)

The client has enclosed a letter of permission to conflict with Mary Elizabeth Fairweather of Priors Hardwick (Purpure, a sun Or within a bordure argent). The bordure needs feeding.

18) Olaf Skytja. Badge Resubmission. Per pale sable and Or, a pheon inverted counterchanged.

{Name reg'd 9/90}

(Floodwood, MN)

The client's first submission(Or, a pheon inverted sable) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 8/00 for conflict with Hreodbeorth MacBeath ([Fieldless] A pheon inverted sable). His next submission (Or, a pheon inverted and a bordure sable) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 12/00 for conflict with an unidentified Ansteorran submission (Or, a pheon inverted and a bordure sable). The client is sticking to his motif.

19) Olaf Skytja. Badge Resubmission. Sable, a pheon inverted and a bordure Or.

{Name reg'd 9/90}

(Floodwood, MN)

The client's previous submission (Sable, a pheon inverted Or) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 11/00 for conflict with Kirk of Wendarrow (Vert, a pheon inverted Or).

20) Otto Garlicsbane. New Device. Argent, a bickern sable surmounted and enfiled with an Amphisbaena gules.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Bellevue, IL)

I could not find any indication that this name has been registered and would appreciate help in locating it.

21) Raenard Bertram Cadwallader. New Device. Quarterly azure and purpure, a tanner's bench inverted Or.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Kenosha, WI)

I could not find any indication that this name has been registered and would appreciate help in locating it.

The charge is documented from Neubecker (138) who describes it as "obscure."

22) Robert von Murrhardt. New Name.

(Mynydd Seren)

Robert is the client's modern name (no proof provided, but it seems fairly unobjectionable). Murrhardt is dated to 1328, according to Stadler, Deutsche Wappen - Bundesrepublik Deutschland cited in "International Civic Heraldry" (http://www.bng.nl/ngw/int/dld/m/ murrhard.htm). The client would like to have an authentic German name for the 1300s.

23) Robert von Murrhardt for White Star Company. New Household Name.

{Name submitted on this LoI}

(Mynydd Seren)

No documentation is enclosed for the name.

24) Scott MacCoy. New Name and Device. Argent, between two bars gules, six martlets sable.

(Blackhawk)

Scott is the client's modern name (copy of driver's license enclosed). MacCoy is in Woulfe (319) as a var of MacAoda. Maclysaght, Irish Surnames (59) notes that MacCoy is "one of the several anglicized forms of Mac Aodha." The client cares most about sound.

I would note for the record that the client's modern last name is "McCoy" so he is basically submitting his modern name with a slight spelling variation.

The blazon could use some help. The proposed blazon was "Argent, two bars gules, six martlets sable three, two, and one."

25) Thorvald Kristofferson. New Name and Device. Or, on a bend wavy purpure, three dolphins embowed fesswise argent.

(Nordleigh)

Thorvald is taken from a cast of characters in an unidentified saga (Njal's??). No other documentation is enclosed. The client cares most about sound and wants an authentic name for an unidentified culture and time period. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

The client will NOT permit the creation of a holding name.

26) William M'Kreaner. New Device. Per bend sinister vert and gules a bend sinister dancetty Or, overall a bear guardant contourney argent.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Blackhawk)

I could not find any indication that this name has been registered and would appreciate help in locating it.

27) Wolfgang von Schwarzhabicht. New Name and Device. Gules, on an escutcheon Or, an eagle displayed sable maintaining a sword Or hafted sable, a chief embattled argent.

(Rimsholt)

No documentation for the name is provided. The client says that he'll accept "Amsel" in place of "Schwarzhabicht." He cares most about language/culture and would like to have an authentic 10th century German name. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

The device needs to be redrawn, has contrast problems, and has a complexity of eight (which is probably too much for a design like this). The client's proposed blazon was: "Sable eagle, displayed, maintaining sword on a Or shield blazon on a Gules field with a white bordure on top." I'd begin by advising the client to omit the chief and make this "Or, an eagle displayed sable, a bordure gules" but I don't know if there are any conflicts.
