Here are the December 2000 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to the Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by March 1, 2001, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Antoinette la Rouge d'Avignon for La Compagnie des Lions Errants. Household Name.

(Northwoods)

The elements are all documented from the Oxford English Dictionary. La compagnie ("company") is on (589) and dated in this spelling to 1393. Lions carries the meaning of "strong, courageous, or fiercely brave," according to (1001) and is dated with this meaning to c1175 and elsewhere (this spelling, however, does not seem to appear -- according to the docs -- until 1634). Errant means "itinerant" according to (375) and is dated with that meaning to c1340 (the chosen spelling, however, is not dated until 1596. The client cares most about meaning (The Company of the Errant Lions). She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

It would seem that a more period spelling would be La Compagnie des Lyons Erraunts according to the submitted documentation (all the elements would then be 14th century). As the client will accept minor changes, this may be a possible improvement.

2) Branwen de Gray of Tewkesbury. New Name and Device. Vert, in chief two oak leaves Or, in fess two acorns dexter and sinister argent to one oak leaf Or, in base one acorn argent, within a bordure embattled Or.

(Caer Anterth Mawr)

Branwen is documented from Hanks and Hodges, First Names (47) and from an unreadable page from the Cambridge Guide to Literature in English (579). de Gray is from The Norman People (269-270) and dated to c1020. It is also found in The Domesday Book (161a, b). Tewkesbury is found in Ibid (162c, 163b-d). The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 11th-13th century name. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

Branwen is found in Jones, A Welsh Miscellany (31). de Gray is found in Reaney and Wilson (203, cp "Gray") and dated to 1196. Tewkesbury is a header spelling in Ekwall (464) of a town that dates back to the 10th century or before.

The blazon is the client's (without alteration). The emblazon is not really heraldry and thus I don't really have any good ideas about how to blazon it. The embattled lines do need to be drawn more boldly.

3) Cadwallon y Rhudd. Change of Registered Device Resubmission. Per fess wavy Or and azure, in chief a fox courant proper.

The client's identical previous device submission was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 7/00 for being drawn too small. The client has now provided a drawing of the proper size. If this device is registered, the client would like his previous device (Per fess wavy Or and azure, in chief a pine bough leaved and fructed proper and in base two bars wavy argent) CHANGED TO A BADGE.

4) Catalina Navarra. New Name and Device. Purpure ermined, a sun argent.

Catalina is documented from Catalgo de Pasajeros a Indias (22) and dated to 1553. Navarra is dated to 1554 in Ibid (152). No copies of the docs were enclosed. The client cares most about having a Spanish/Iberian sound and would like the name to be authentic for that culture.

5) Charles of Whithorse. Device Resubmission. Quarterly sable and gules, two horses combattant, a bordure argent.

The client's previous submission (Quarterly sable and gules, two horses combattant argent) was returned by Laurel on 2/00 for conflict with Evandre of Middleham (Quarterly sable and gules, a horse rampant argent). The client has added a bordure to clear the conflict.

6) Christopher Jameson. Badge Submission. (Fieldless) A cross crosslet quarterly gules and argent.

7) Coldedernhale, Shire of. Group Device Resubmission. Purpure, on a pile wavy argent, a seawolf purpure, overall a laurel wreath Or.

The clients' previous submission (Argent, chausse, a yale rampant and in chief a laurel wreath vert) was returned by Laurel on 4/00 for conflict with Nicholos of the Hill Folk (Vert, on a pile argent, a dragon rampant gules). A petition of support is enclosed.

8) Rimsholt, Canton of. Group Device Augmentation. Purpure, a fir tree couped within a laurel wreath argent, for augmentation in base an annulet Or, a bordure argent.

The augmentation was granted by HRM Dag III in January 1999 (AS XXXIII).

9) Seraphina Sinclair. Name Resubmission.

(Grey Gargoyles)

The client's previous submission (Seónaid Sinclair) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 7/00 at the client's request.

Seraphina is found in Withycombe (266) as the name of an early saint. Sinclair is found in Reaney & Wilson (411) as a header spelling. The client cares most about sound.
