Greetings unto THL Clarissa Wykeham, Dragon; Lady Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Rouge Scarpe; and the commenting members of the Midrealm College of Heralds; from THL Paul Wickenden of Thanet, Escutcheon.

Here are the August 2000 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by November 1, 2000, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Angelique Michele d'Hérisson. New Name and Device. Per saltire purpure and Or, semy-de-lis counterchanged, a hedgehog proper.

(Baile na Scolari)

The submitting herald summarizes the enclosed documentation expertly, so we can do no better than to quote him in full:

"Angelique is documented in Withycombe, under Angelica, the name of the lady beloved by Orlanda. Angelique is noted as 'not uncommon in France.' (A 1996 LOAR registration from Caid, Angelique Brigitte de Beauvais, uses just the Withycombe for documentation and successful registration). There is also a precedent from Bruce Draconarius, calling Angelique acceptable for SCA registration:

"'Withycombe, p.24, cites Angelica as the "name of the lady beloved by Orlando" in the works of Ariosto (1474-1533); we find it and its French form Angelique, acceptable. (Angelique Marielle DuBois, August, 1992, pg, 20)'

"However, we also find it on the web page "Jewish Given Names Found in Les Noms Des Israé1ites en France", by Aryanhwy merch Catmael, (www.sit.wisc.edu/ ~sfriedmann/names/levy/angelique.html), dated to the 13th C. (copy of web page & original source included).

"Michele (a spelling variant of her mundane middle name) is documented from a genealogical list of marriages, deaths, etc., at www.geneanet.org/cgi-bin/search.pl?language=fr&name=Michele, dated to 1601. Other spelling variations are found on Lord Colm Dubh's web page, An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris (www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/ paris.html), listing Michiel and Michièle.

"Finally, d'Hérisson is found in Dauzat, p. 325, under Héricier. No dates are given in the entry beyond references to Normandie-Picardie; perhaps someone with skill in French can better translate the entry."

The client cares most about having a French name and will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

2) Bathory Anastasia. Device Resubmission. Per fess wavy sable and barry wavy Or and sable, in chief a decrescent Or.

{Name reg'd 2/00}

(Euclid, OH)

The client's identical previous submission was withdrawn by the client (see 2/00 LoAR). The client has included a letter of permission to conflict with the Canton of Hawkwood (Per chevron Azure and argent, in chief a descrescent Or) and another letter of permission to conflict with Christopher Edward Hawkins (Sable, a descrescent Or).

3) Constanza de Sevilla. New Device. Or, a grenade gules.

{Name submitted on 8/00 MK ILoI}

(Nordskogen)

This item was pended last month for lack of payment. Payment has now been provided.

4) Danr Bjornsson. New Badge. (Fieldless) An arrow inverted argent, winged Or.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Radcliff, KY)

I have no records in my possession indicating that this name is registered.

5) Gwenllian Rhys Talbot. New Name and Device. Per bend azure and purpure, a maunch argent, on a chief azure three roses argent, barbed vert, and seeded gules.

(Border Downs)

The client uses a great variety of sources for the name. The client begins by citing Withycombe (118 and 127) but does not indicate why. Examination of those two pages in the Third Edition (the copy I have) do not reveal any relevant information. From Jones, "A Simple Guide to Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welsh13.html), we get the given name Gwenllian which is described as the second most common feminine name of the period. It is also found in Conway, The Celtic Book of Names (89) and described as "popular name since the Middle Ages." Ibid (114) says that Rhys "has been a popular male name throughout Welsh history." Talbot is dated to 1066 in Baring-Gold, Family Names and Their Story (241). Foster, Dictionary of Heraldry (189) has the Talbot arms in it.

While it is not indicated, I am assuming that Rhys is an unmarked patronymic. The client cares most about meaning and would like to have an authentic 13th century Welsh/English name. She will NOT permit MAJOR changes. She will NOT allow the creation of a holding name.

The bend division needs to be redrawn, but the major problem is the dark chief on the dark field. The device will have to be returned because of contrast.

6) Isabel Ulfsdottir. New Badge. (Fieldless) On an ivy leaf vert, a wolf's pawprint argent.

{Name reg'd ??/??}

(Radcliff, KY)

I have no records in my possession indicating that this name is registered.

7) John Paul Devereaux. Device Resubmission. Gyronny of six azure and Or, a bordure counterchanged.

{Name reg'd 2/94}

(Sternfeld)

The client's first submission (Azure, a mullet Or voided gules between in fess two double-bitted axes and issuant from base a demi-sun Or) was returned by Laurel on 2/94 for conflict with Hall (Azure, three battleaxes in fess Or). The client's second attempt (Azure, in fess a mullet gules fimbriated between two double-bitted axes palewise Or) was returned by Laurel on 4/98 for conflict with Morgan Bloodaxe (Azure, a triangle of three battleaxes fretted Or). The client's third submission (Azure, a mullet gules fimbriated between in fess two battleaxes Or) was returned by Laurel on 5/00 for the same conflict as the second. For this fourth attempt, the client has chosen a complete redesign.

8) Madoc of Windhaven. New Name and Device. Azure, a chevron inverted Or ermined sable, in chief a compass rose argent and in base a massacre proper.

(Windhaven)

Madoc is noted as an old Welsh name in Withycombe (203) who lists it in this spelling only as a header, but provides several dated variants. Windhaven is a registered SCA branch name (reg'd 10/82).

The blazon is mine, but is flawed. The massacre in this case has horns (attires) of Or and a scalp of argent. This all may need to be blazoned.

9) Olaf Skytja. New Badge. Vert, a pheon inverted Or.

{Name reg'd 9/90}

(Vilk{u,} Urvas)

While the submitted proposed blazon was "Sable a pheon inverted Or," the emblazon clearly shows the field as vert.

10) Siegound Eisenhaut. New Name and Device. Sable, a dragon's head erased Or, orbed and langued gules, on a chief embattled Or, an arrow fesswise to sinister gules.

(Castel Rouge)

No documentation for the name was enclosed. The client cares most about sound. He wants an authentic 14th century German name. He will NOT permit MAJOR changes.

I wonder if the client really meant to submit Siegmund? Eisenhut [note the spelling] is a header spelling in Brechenmacher (I: 394) and has Ysenhut dated to 1228. Perhaps the client would like Siegmund Eisenhut (it preserves the sound at least)?

11) Ulrich Rickers. New Name and Device. Argent semy of feathers bendwise sinister azure, a caucasian triton proper, tailed and crined azure.

(Cleftlands)

Ulrich is found in "Medieval German Given Names from Silesia" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/bahlow_v.htm). Rickers is allegedly in Bahlow (German ed) (417, under "Reichert") and dated to 1561 as a patronymic of Richard, but that entry is on (414) and does not list this name. Instead, I found Rickers under "Rickert" on (423) -- or (456) in the English edition. The client cares most about having a 14th century Germanic name. and would like his name to be authentic for that period and language. He will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

12) Vilk{u,} Urvas. New Group Device. Azure, an armored wolf passant uliant contourney, tail coward, argent, in dexter chief a laurel wreath Or.

{Name submitted on 4/00 MK ELoI}

(Floodwood, MN)

13) Wolfran Van Kouwenhoven. New Name and Device. Or, a chevron gules, overall a stag in gaze proper.

(Kentwood MI)

Wolfran is allegedly found in Bahlow (English ed), but I could only find Wolfram (on page 621). Van Kouwenhoven is found at the "Genealogy Web Site" ( http://conovergenealogy.com/pages/my01005.html). No copy of this webpage was enclosed. The client would like to have an authentic name for an unspecified language and culture and cares most about language and culture.
