Here are the June 2000 submissions for your consideration and commenting. All commentary should be sent to Rouge Scarpe Herald, Aryanhwy merch Catmael, early enough to arrive by September 1, 2000, with copies to Dragon and myself. Unless otherwise stated, all name submissions will accept minor and major changes to grammar and/or spelling.

1) Aaron Mac Áedáin. Device Resubmission. Per bend sinister argent and sable, a martlet displayed and a hog statant, a bordure counterchanged.

The client's previous submission (Per bend sinister argent and sable, a martlet displayed and a hog statant counterchanged) was returned by Rouge Scarpe for redrawing of the martlet. The bird has been redrawn and a bordure added. The bordure needs to be fed.

2) Althea of Corinth. Change of Registered Name and New Device. Purpure, a caucasian greek sphinx sejant Or.

Alathaea was the wife of Oeneus, according to Gimal, The Penguin Dictionary of Mythology (37) (no copies enclosed). A website entitled, "The Strange and Unusual of Names" (http://www.lymax.com/kaeori) gives "Althea/Althaea" as a queen of Calydon. The client also cites the Academy of Saint Gabriel (but without a web page or a report). Verbatim: "Below are the results of your search in no particular order: 1548 1057 These dates show that the name Althea was used in period." Corinth is documented from an unspecified part of the History Channel.com site which is alleged to state: "Ancient Corinth was one of the oldest and most powerful of the Greek City-states, dating from Homeric times. Destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC, it was restored by Julius Caesar in 46 BC. Later it passed to the Byzantine Crusaders." The client wants an anglicized version of the Greek name and wants it to be an authentic Anglicization.

The client wishes to have both of her currently registered names (Edward Geoffrey de Montaign of Huntingdon [reg'd 9/83?] and Raibeardh Micheil O'Donnell of Ticonnel [reg'd 10/76?] released). Please see next item for the instructions for the handling of her various pieces of armory.

Multiple problems here. If some generous soul would provide the documentation of those dates from Gabriel for the given name, I think we would have some suitable documentation. And while the documentation shows that the city of Corinth existed in period, it does not appear to show that the name of the city was used in period. Regardless, no photocopies were enclosed for any of these sources. With the exception of the material from Gabriel (if someone can find where it comes from), we'll need documentation that does not require photocopies or some docs with this form.

The submitted blazon was: "Purpure, a caucasian greek sphinx sejant Or, the face and upper torso proper" and the emblazon shows that the upper part of the sphinx in pale skinned while the hair is golden. Any suggestions on blazoning this correctly would be appreciated.

3) Althea of Corinth. Administrative Actions.

This client currently has two separate names registered to her, both of which she would like to have released (see above) and has several pieces of armory, which she would like to dispose of in the following manner:

a) Edward Geoffrey de Montaign of Huntingdon: She requests that the device (Gules, on a bend sinister Or, three roses sable, within a bordure engrailed Or) [reg'd 9/83?] is transferred to her new name [presumably as a badge, but she does not say this]. Edward also has a badge (Sable, a lion of St Mark sejant affronty, wings displayed, within an orle of crosses formy Or) [reg'd 8/90] that she would like to have released. [Note: this badge is erroneously listed under "Edward Godfre de Montaign of Huntingdon"]

b) Edward Geoffrey de Montaign of Huntingdon for Catrum Sagittorium [reg'd 2/92]: She requests that this household name and badge (Or, a thunderbolt and on a bordure gules a lightning bolt in orle Or) [reg'd 2/92] be released.

c) Raibeardh Micheil of Tirconnel: She requests that the device (Per bend sinister enhanced and arched sable and argent, an estoile of four greater and four lesser points argent, and a wolf's head affronty erased sable) [reg'd 10/76] be released.

4) Caedmon Wilson. New Name.

St Caedmon was a 7th century saint of Saxon heritage, according to The Catholic Encyclopedia ( http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03131c.htm). Wilson is the client's modern surname and is dated to 1341 in Reaney & Wilson (494).

5) Elsa Krueger von Württemberg. Change of Registered Name.

No documentation is provided for the given name. The surname is her modern surname, but she also provides documentation for it. Under "Kroeger" it is dated "from the Middle Ages through colonial times" as a German form of a Dutch surname, according to http://clanhuston.com/name/namei-o.htm. A Johannes Krueger was Christened in 1584, according to a search at http://familysearch.org. The same site found a Hans Krueger who was born c1568 in Dessau. And Foko ( http://foko.genealogy.net/cgi-bin/FOKO/suche) dates the name to 1557 and 1582. No documentation of the locative is provided. The client cares most about language and culture. Her instructions about changes are quite specific: "I will accept adding or removing accent marks in this name. I am most concerned about keeping the spelling of 'Krueger' the same. If changes need to be made with Elsa and Wurttemberg I will accept that." She would like to have a late 16th century name.

Can we get some help on the first and last elements? Elsa is mentioned (undated) in Withycombe (102) as a German dim of Elizabeth.

The client's currently registered name is Lecia Elaine Bare (reg'd 2/97). She would like to make sure that her device (Argent, two irises purpure slipped and leaved vert conjoined in base, a chief doubly-enarched purpure) (reg'd 2/97) is transferred to this new name if it is registered.

6) Erich Türmschlager. New Name and Device. Gules masoned, on a pale embattled argent, a sledgehammer sable.

Erich is in Bahlow (118, English ed) and dated in this spelling to the 14th century. It is also documented to the 12th century in the spelling of Eric in Balteus, Lives of the Saints (342). The client would like to have a surname that evokes his interest in siege engines. This name is intended to mean "destroyer of towers" and is a constructed byname. Turm (without the umlaut) is documented in Bahlow (560, op cit) under "Thormann" as meaning "tower" and is supported by a German dictionary. Schlager is documented as meaning "strike, knock, beat" according to the same dictionary. It is found in several names, including Merkenschlager, found in Bahlow (363, op cit), meaning "feller of trees." The client is amenable to improvements, cares most about meaning, and would like an authentic 11th-13th century German name.

7) Grietje Crynes. New Name.

Both elements are dated from a German genealogical book by Koerner, Deutsches Sefchlechterbuch (248). Grietje is dated to 1582 and Crynes is dated to 1550. The client cares most about having a Frisian name and would like her name to be authentic for a Frisian of the 16th century. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.

8) Helen Vaur. Change of Registered Name.

Both elements are documented from Jones, "A Simple Guide To Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/welsh13.html). Helen is a header spelling, documented through an entry for Elena. Vaur is a mutated form of the byname Mawr ("big, senior"). She cares most about having a name that means "Big Helen" and would like to have an authentic 12th-14th century Welsh name.

She says that her current registered name is Publius Cornelius Nauta (which she would like to release) and that she would like to have her current device transferred to this new name if it is registered. However, I can find no record of this name or device.

9) James Cunningham. New Badge. Per pale argent and Or, a Norse H (hagall) rune gules, overall an arrow inverted sable.

It is my understanding that we do not register thin charges that lay on a field division. Laurel has previously refused to register a sword that lay on a division line. Perhaps, someone would check the precedents for this?

10) Keana of the Star Eyes. New Name.

Keana is given as "a shortened spelling of Kay-Anna (1200s Irish/English). Star Eyes is "a physical description of one pattern my hazel eyes make when changing between green and brown (nickname) -- would prefer this phrase to be in English." The client cares most about sound.

Any help providing useful documentation for this name would be most appreciated!

11) Keina ferch Siôn. New Device. Argent, a fretty cross, on a chief azure, three lozenges argent.

12) Kudrun þe Pilegrim. Device Resubmission. Vert, a pile Or, overall an open book argent, clasped Or.

The client first submitted (Azure, a peregrine falcon argent, beaked and legged Or, maintaining in its dexter talon an open book argent) which was returned by Laurel on 5/98 for lack of paperwork [the database erroneously says that there was a conflict]. The client then changed her submission (Gules, on a quadruple mount couped argent, a peregrine falcon rising, wings inverted and addorsed, maintaining in its dexter talon an open book argent), which was returned by Laurel on 5/99 for conflict with Jehan de la Marche (Gules, a crow rising, pierced by an arrow, both argent) [the database is missing these actions in its record]. The client has opted to delete the bird and try a new motif.

The submitted blazon identifies the tincture of the book as "proper" but it is essentially argent with sable outlining. I am slightly concerned about the visibility of the book against the pile.

13) Lancelot Von Windhaven. New Name and Device. Ermines, on a chief argent, two keys in saltire sable.

The documentation reads in full: "Lancelot is an extension of Lance, first name rule, von Windhaven = of Windhaven, which I am, or as a holding name is fine." The client wants a authentic name for the 1630s (30 Year War) period.

The client's modern name is Lance, however, I do not believe that this can be used to document Lancelot. Lancelot is, however, dated to the 13th century by Withycombe (190). Windhaven is an SCA branch name (reg'd 10/82) and should be fine. I would argue that we should ignore the client's request for an OOP name.

14) Marian Elizabeth Wollenschläger. Name Resubmission.

The client's previous name (Mary Ann Elizabeth Wollenschläger) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 3/00 for use of three given names. The client has dropped the second name element.

Marian is in Withycombe (209) as a variant of "Marion." Both spellings were apparently in use in period, although Withycombe does not date this spelling. Elizabeth is in ibid (99) and dated to the 13th century. Wollenschläger is a constructed byname from the element Wollen- (found in Bahlow, English ed [621, under "Wollenbär"] and dated to 1350) and Schläger (found in ibid [492] and dated to 1378). The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 15th-16th century Bavarian name.

15) Meriel Fitz William. New Badge. (Fieldless) A seahorse niant argent crined and finned Or.

16) Merit de la Rose. New Name and Device. Ermine, on a chief gules, three roses argent.

The documentation reads in full: "I chose to use my first name, as it is allowable. de la Rose is an established SCA name (see Catherine de la Rose -- Queen, Middle Kingdom), or as a holding name, this is fine." The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic "French/Italian 1400s to 1500s" name.

Merit is the client's modern given name. I would consider the second element to be undocumented. Happily, it is in Reaney & Wilson (383) and dated to 1242.

17) Northshield, Principality of for Gryphon's Claw, Order of. New Order Name and Badge. (Fieldless) A griffin's jambe a la quise bend sinister wise Or, grasping a compass rose argent.

The name is documented as: "Common English. Naming convention similar to Gryphon's Talon."

It would be nice to have some more useful documentation for the name.

Stefanus is in Withycombe (273) under "Stephen" and dated to 1273. Lufmancat is in Reaney & Wilson (286) under "Loveman" and dated to 1066. The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 9th-11th century name.

21) Thomas of Ravenhill. New Name and Device. Per bend lozengy vert and argent and Or, overall a boar passant sable.

Thomas is the client's modern given name. It is also documented from Reaney & Wilson (443), as a given name, dated to 1086. Ravenhill is an SCA branch name (reg'd 8/84) and is also found in Reaney & Wilson (372) as a header spelling.. The client cares most about sound and would like an authentic 14th-16th century English name.
