This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptances and Returns for Escutcheon's January 2001 letter. Comments in braces {} were removed from the Letter of Intent sent to Laurel and the College of Arms. Names, devices, or badges in braces have been returned or pended; general comments or replies to commentary are also placed in braces.

1) Antoinette la Rouge d'Avignon for La Compagnie des Liouns Erraunte. Household name.
Name reg'd 4/96
The elements are all documented from the Oxford English Dictionary. <La compagnie> ("company") is on p. 589 and dated in this spelling to 1393. <Liouns> carries the meaning of "strong, courageous, or fiercely brave," according to p. 1001, and is dated to 1470. <Erraunte> means "itinerant" according to (375) and is dated with to 1340. The client cares most about meaning (The Company of the Errant Lions). She will NOT accept MAJOR changes. Submitted as <La Compagnie des Lions Errants>, we have taken Escutcheon's suggestion and put all of the elements into the same time period.
2) Branwen de Gray of Tewkesbury. New name {and device.
Vert, in chief two oak leaves Or, in fess two acorns dexter and sinister argent to one oak leaf Or, in base one acorn argent, within a bordure embattled Or.}
<Branwen> is found in Jones, A Welsh Miscellany, p.31. <de Gray> is found in Reaney and Wilson s.n. Gray and dated to 1196. <Tewkesbury> is a header spelling in Ekwall p. 464 of a town that dates back to the 10th century or before. The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 11th-13th century name. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.
{The device is being returned for non-period style. There is no way to blazon this in such a manner that the emblazon could be accurately reproduced from the blazon only. As a rule of thumb, whatever cannot be blazoned is most likely not period, and as we know no way to accurately blazon this, we are returning it for reworking. Also, the bordure should be drawn thicker with larger embattlements.}
3) Cadwallon Rhudd. Change of device resubmission.

The client's identical previous device submission was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 7/00 for using forms of an incorrect size. The client has now provided forms of the proper size. If this device is registered, the client would like his previous device (Per fess wavy Or and azure, in chief a pine bough leaved and fructed proper and in base two bars wavy argent) CHANGED TO A BADGE. A fox proper, according to the Glossary of Terms, is "red with black socks and white at tip of tail."
4) Catalina de Navarra. New name and device.
Purpure ermined, a sun in splendor argent.
<Catalina> is the second most popular name in Elsbeth Anne Roth, "16th-Century Spanish Women's Names," (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~kvs/fnames.html). <de Navarra> is found in Juliana de Luna, "Spanish Names from the Late 15th Century," (http://www.s-gabriel.org/ names/juliana/isabella/locative.html), and means "of Navarra." Submitted as <Catalina Navarra>, we have added the preposition to conform with period practice. The client cares most about having a Spanish/Iberian sound and would like the name to be authentic for that culture.
{The device does not conflict with the badge of the Ansteorran Chronicler, (reg'd 4-81 via Ansteorra), "[Tinctureless] A mullet of five greater and five lesser points distilling gouttes," as this badge was released on the November 2000 LoAR.}
5) Charles of Whithorse. Device resubmission.
Quarterly sable and gules, two horses combatant, a bordure argent.
Name reg'd 2/00
The client's previous submission, "Quarterly sable and gules, two horses combattant argent" was returned by Laurel on 2/00 for conflict with Evandre of Middleham, "Quarterly sable and gules, a horse rampant argent." The client has added a bordure to clear the conflict.
6) Christopher Jameson. New badge.
[Fieldless] A cross crosslet quarterly gules and argent.

This does not conflict with Tigernach mac Éoghain ua Áeda, (reg 2/00 via Middle), "[Fieldless] A cross crosslet per pale gules and argent." There is one CD for fieldlessness, and one for the quarterly vs. per pale.
7) Coldedernhale, Shire of. Group device resubmission.
Purpure, on a pile wavy, a seawolf purpure, overall a laurel wreath Or.

The clients' previous submission, "Argent, chausse, a yale rampant and in chief a laurel wreath vert," was returned by Laurel on 4/00 for conflict with Nicholos of the Hill Folk, "Vert, on a pile argent, a dragon rampant gules." A petition of support is enclosed.
{To Kevin & Phebe: Sorry, Kevin, Phebe is right. The RfS state "overall charges must have good contrast with the field, not with the charges they overly." Or has excellent contrast with purpure. And I would hate to ask them to shorten the leaves, as this is a perfectly lovely laurel wreath. Not quite circular, but close enough, and so nicely drawn.}

This is being returned for redrawing. Laurel wreaths should be nearly circular in shape, and this one in particular needs to be much larger and encircle the tree entirely.}
8) Seraphina Sinclair. Name resubmission.
The client's previous submission, <Seónaid Sinclair> was withdrawn by Rouge Scarpe on 7/00 at the client's request. <Seraphina> is a header in Withycombe, who mention it as the name of an early saint. The 1st edition Withycombe says that the name was "occasionally used in the 19th century," which does not make promising evidence that it was used in period. However, the name has been registered without comment as recently as January 1999 and May 2000. <Sinclair> is found in Reaney & Wilson as a header spelling. All dated forms of the surname include the preposition <de>. The client cares most about sound.
