This is the Middle Kingdom Letter of Acceptances and Returns for Escutcheon's July 2000 letter. Comments in braces {} were removed from the Letter of Intent sent to Laurel and the College of Arms. Names, devices, or badges in braces have been returned or pended; general comments or replies to commentary are also placed in braces.

1) Aaron mac Áedáin. Device resubmission.

A number of the commenters were concerned about the thinness of the border; however, as this is the only possible problem with the device, and Laurel has recently registered some awfully thin borders, we are sending this one up.

This name has some complicated problems. The documentation provided for
While this is within the SCA's gray period for registerability, it doesn't
help much for this submission. There are problems with both cultural
consistency and temporal consistency. There is little evidence for
substantial contact between Greece and England, and it is highly unlikely
that an English given name would be combined with a Greek locative.
Additionally, there are problems with temporal consistency; the time span

2) Caedmon Wilson. New name.
St Caedmon was a 7th century saint of Saxon heritage, according to The Catholic Encyclopedia (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03131c.htm ). <Wilson> is the client's modern surname and is dated to 1341 in Reaney & Wilson (494).
3) Else Krueger of Württemburg. Change of registered name.
<Else> is found in Scott, "15th Century German Women's Names," (http://www.s-gabriel.org/docs/ german15f.html) The surname is her modern surname, but she also provides documentation for it. Under <Kroeger> it is dated "from the Middle Ages through colonial times" as a German form of a Dutch surname, according to http://clanhuston.com/name/namei-o.htm. A Johannes Krueger was Christened in 1584, according to a search at http://familysearch.org. The same site found a Hans Krueger who was born c1568 in Dessau. And Foko (http://foko.genealogy.net/cgi-bin/ FOKO/suche) dates the name to 1557 and 1582. No documentation of the locative was provided, and unfortunately my copy of Bahlow is lent out, and so I can't see if there is any help there.
The client cares most about language and culture. Her instructions about changes are quite specific: "I will accept adding or removing accent marks in this name. I am most concerned about keeping the spelling of 'Krueger' the same. If changes need to be made with Elsa and Wurttemberg I will accept that." She would like to have a late 16th century name. Submitted as <Elsa…> we have changed the spelling to a documented form.
The client's currently registered name is Lecia Elaine Bare (reg'd 2/97). She would like to make sure that her device "Argent, two irises purpure slipped and leaved vert conjoined in base, a chief doubly-enarched purpure," (reg'd 2/97) is transferred to this new name if it is registered.

5) Edward Geoffrey de Montaign of Huntingdon. Administrative actions.
a) Badge "Sable, a lion of St Mark sejant affronty, wings displayed, within an orle of crosses formy Or", (reg'd 8/90) she would like released.
b) For Catrum Sagittorium (reg'd 2/92): She requests that this household name and badge (Or, a thunderbolt and on a bordure gules a lightning bolt in orle Or) (reg'd 2/92) be released.
c) Raibeardh Micheil of Tirconnel: She requests that the device (Per bend sinister enhanced and arched sable and argent, an estoile of four greater and four lesser points argent, and a wolf's head affronty erased sable) [reg'd 10/76] be released.
6) Erich Turmschlager. New name & device.
Gules masoned, on a pale embattled argent, a sledgehammer sable.
<Erich> is in Bahlow (118, English ed) and dated in this spelling to the 14th century. The client would like to have a surname that evokes his interest in siege engines. This name is intended to mean "destroyer of towers" and is a constructed byname. <Turm-> is documented in Bahlow (560, op cit) under "Thormann" as meaning "tower" and is supported by a German dictionary. <Schläger> is found in Bahlow (492) and dated to 1378. It is found in several names, including <Merkenschlager>, found in ibid (363), meaning "feller of trees." The client is amenable to improvements, cares most about meaning, and would like an authentic 11th-13th century German name.
7) Grietje Crynes. New name.
Both elements are dated from a German genealogical book by Koerner, Deutsches Sefchlechterbuch (248). <Grietje> is dated to 1582 and <Crynes> is dated to 1550. The client cares most about having a Frisian name and would like her name to be authentic for a Frisian of the 16th century. She will NOT accept MAJOR changes.
8) Helen Vaur. New name.
Both elements are documented from Jones, "A Simple Guide To Constructing 13th Century Welsh Names" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ welsh13.html). <Helen> is a header spelling, documented through an entry for <Elena>. <Vaur> is a mutated form of the byname <Mawr> ("big, senior"). She cares most about having a name that means "Big Helen" and would like to have an authentic 12th-14th century Welsh name.
Her currently registered name is Publius Cornelius Nauta (reg 7/97 via the East) and she would like it released. She would also like to have her current device transferred to this new name if it is registered. However, we can find no record of this name or device.
9) James Cunningham. New badge.
Per pale argent and Or, a Norse H (hagall) rune gules, overall an arrow inverted sable.

Unfortunately, no evidence was given and none could be found for this name, therefore it must be returned. However, if the client is interested in considering some alternatives, here are a few we can offer:
There is an English feminine name <Keina>, dated to 1202 in Reaney & Wilson s.n. Cain. If she would like a surname that refers to the color of her eyes, Reaney & Wilson s.n. Browney have <Browneye> c.1290, <Brouneye> 2402, and <Brownye> 1335, and s.n. Blackie have <Blackeye> 1275, <Blakheye> 1327. A hypothetical <Greneye> does not seem unreasonable, based on these variants, and the spellings of <Green> found s.n. Green. If she is interested in surnames that refer to stars, there are a number of possibilities found in Reaney & Wilson s.n. Starr.}

The client first submitted "Azure, a peregrine falcon argent, beaked and legged Or, maintaining in its dexter talon an open book argent" which was returned by Laurel on 5/98 for lack of paperwork. The client then changed her submission to "Gules, on a quadruple mount couped argent, a peregrine falcon rising, wings inverted and addorsed, maintaining in its dexter talon an open book argent," which was returned by Laurel on 5/99 for conflict with Jehan de la Marche (Gules, a crow rising, pierced by an arrow, both argent). The client has opted to delete the bird and try a new motif.
While the book does have poor contrast with the pile, according to the rules, overall charges must have "good contrast with the field, not with the charge that they overly." Therefore, we do not foresee any problems in registering this.
12) Lancelot of Windhaven. New name & device.
Counter-ermine, on a chief argent, two keys in saltire sable.
<Lancelot> is dated to the 13th century by Withycombe (90). <Windhaven> is an SCA branch name (reg. 10/82). The client wants an authentic name for the 1630s (30 Year War) period.
Submitted as <von Windhaven>, we have corrected the language of the preposition. Past Laurel precedent has stated that the language of the preposition in the phrase "of Groupname" must match the language of the branch name, e.g., <von Drachenwalde>, but <of Windhaven>.
13) Marian Elsebeth Wollenschläger. Name resubmission.
The client's previous name (Mary Ann Elizabeth Wollenschläger) was returned by Rouge Scarpe on 3/00 for use of three given names. The client has dropped the second name element.
<Marian> is in Withycombe (209) as a variant of "Marion." Both spellings were apparently in use in period, although Withycombe does not date this spelling. <Elsebeth> is found in Scott, "15th Century German Women's Names," (http://www.s-gabriel.org/docs/ german15f.html). <Wollenschläger> is a constructed byname from the element <Wollen-> (found in Bahlow, English ed [621, under "Wollenbär"] and dated to 1350) and <Schläger> (found in ibid [492] and dated to 1378). The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic 15th-16th century Bavarian name.
Submitted as <Marian Elizabeth Wollenschläger>, we have changed the English form of <Elizabeth> to a 15th century German form of <Elizabeth>. While we could not find any evidence for <Marian> in German, (the closest form being <Marie>, found in Scott, "Medieval German Given Names from Silesia," (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/ names/bahlow_v.htm)), <Marie> is enough different in sound from <Marian> that I don't feel authorized in changing it.

<Merit> is the client's modern given name. <de la Rose> is in Reaney & Wilson (383), dated to 1242. The client cares most about sound and would like to have an authentic "French/Italian 1400s to 1500s" name.
